Program not Responding

Options
My new laptop (samsung RF511 only a few months old) now only works for a few minutes before it says program not responding. This is on all programs - excel, games, internet.

I already have kaspersky as security but I assume it has some kind of virus.

Should I be downloading something like Ccleaner or something else to try to fix or just take it to someone who knows better. (I am willing to try a few things but have limited knowledge)

Any help will be great.

It could be faulty hardware or a driver issue.

Does it happen in safe mode? (Repeatedly tap F8 after you turn it on.)

Can you do a system restore to before you started experiencing this?

If this has just recently started happening, it is possible Kaspersky is causing it (others have reported similar problems)

D/L and run ccleaner, and also d/l and post a HijackThis log to check if anything else is present

Try disabling Kaspersky temporarily and see if the problem presists. If this cures the problem you have a couple of options:
    1. If it is a paid-for subscription, contact Kaspersky support for assistance
    2. if it is a free version (e.g. supplied by your bank), uninstall it and replace with one of the free AV solutions (Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast are the best ones)

Russel - I have tried safe mode and nothing seems to happen but I won't really allow me to use any files to check it. I have also tried to do a system restore but it freezes before it gets very far.

Figment - I have tried to run ccleaner but it freezes before getting very far and have disabled Kaspersky but no difference.

Thanks for your suggestions. The computer guy is coming in tomorrow so I will try him and see what he says.

Couldn't understand what you mean by nothing happens? Are you saying it boots up fine in safemode, but is unresponsive? What do you mean by "couldn't use any files", do you mean programs?

My guess from the info provided (ie works fine for several minutes before the problem occurs) is that there is a software confluct here, I agree with the suggestion that Kaspersky may be the cause, as stated there have been problems with it of late, so the first thing to do is to uninstall it (in safemode).

Thanks - In safe mode I have tried to use various programs eg excel, internet, games but it says that they are not supported in safe mode -eg microsoft can't verify the authenticity of the program.

Ok I will try to unstall kaspersky - It came preloaded on the laptop, so hoping it is easy.

Many programs will not run in safe mode, and it was not intended for that purpose. Safe Mode is more a troubleshooting tool - it allows Windows to be started with the bare minimum running in the background and most/all startup items disabled. System Restore does usually work in Safe mode.

A HijackThis log would be very useful.

    Thanks everyone.

Trying to run hijack this log, but it jams before it has finished downloading.

Will see if I can do it before handing it to the professional tomorrow.
