Loan approved.. Account frozen (natwest)
Hello ladies and gents. I'm after quick advise and maybe some reassurance that I'm not going crazy.
Last week I applied for a loan with natwest. The total was for £13700. Part for a used car and part for a family holiday.
I initially applied online where I instantly got an "approved". Woohoo... Unfortunately thereafter things starting getting very difficult.
The Internet application form would only approve the loan BUT not pay it into the account as errors occurred. I decided to go in branch. The lovely lady at the help desk helped me and directed me to the appropriate person which I had to wait for.
I saw the gentleman briefly walk past me and say "I'll be a few minz". I guess he was bored or wanted to test my patience? He kept walking past talking to colleagues, laughing etc, even went out for a cigarette I saw him. 38 minutes later he returned and was ready for me. I was still very polite as im sure he's a busy guy and needed some time away from customers. Not a big deal...
He went through the whole form again with a very unprofessional attitude and strangely very laid back, leaning back in his chair chewing gum, texting people during the time....
Anyway everything was approved. Handed my payslips/passport etc for photocopies, he said the money would be in my account in 3 days as he wasn't in the following day and the manager was off the day after. Apparently they both needed to be present to double check and sign it off. He said the money is 99.9% in your account, just needed a signature of that manager. No problem...
3rd day I had no phone call and no money in my account, I decided to pop into branch yet again. Where "a slight hiccup had occurred". Another 45 mins wait and the same gentleman saw me. He was extremely unprofessional the first time round and I made nothing of it but this time it was starting to annoy me, however I maintained my politeness and respect. He said after a long and gruelling interview which felt like an interrogation he decided to call my place of work and went into the back room to do so. No problem....
Once he returned he said the money's ok, it's in your account now but the account is frozen until you prove where the money is going. Seemed strange but I've never taken a loan before maybe it's standard procedure?
I went to the private trader and paid a deposit (£500, cars total cost is about £10800) I received a deposit slip with all the details, returned to the branch where I had to wait another 25 minutes because the manager was out to lunch.... No problem....
Once the manager arrived, he said the deposit slip is fine, the person who did the loan didn't agree and wanted an invoice... I'd had enough and was just about to say stick your money I don't want it when the manager said its fine. So he gave me the remaining money for the car. I thought it was a very stressful process but maybe it's normal.
I went and got the car, (very nice car by the way) and went home. I was checking online for plane tickets for the family, upon finding cheap easyjet tickets I decided to purchase them.... My card was declined. "not authorised by bank please contact 0870 xxxx"
I called up and it was fraud prevention unit. They told me my cards been blocked and I'd need to go into branch with 2 forms of ID. I made nothing of it until the phone all ended at which point it hit me.. WHAT? I called natwest and explained EVERYTHING from loan/withdrawal etc. after being transferred from one call to another they told me "your cards been cancelled and your bank account frozen. We can't give you any more information please go in branch"
Sorry for such a long write up. I'm just confused, is this standard procedure? Are they going to ask me to prove the flight tickets etc too. This has eaten up 2 days and looks like I will spend a few hours at the bank tomorrow also.

I have money coming in and havent had a holiday in almost 4 years I think I deserve to treat myself. Either way you may be correct but that's not what I'm questioning, surely of I'm not able to pay it back it wouldn't be approved or accepted...0

your big mistake was banking with Natwest...
I closed my account with them (after they messed me about) and they told me for six weeks that they had sent my money to my new bank. My new bank insisted they hadn't received it. After six weeks Natwest found the cheque...they had put it in my file!0 -
Kaldingo, I'm sorry that I have nothing constructive to add (I've never had a personal loan), but just wanted to say that the service you received is completely appalling !!! It'd get my back up the minute I saw him swan past laughing with colleagues & ignoring you to go & have a fag, I'd be tempted to ask him if he was even interested in my custom! What a disgrace. I do hope you get it sorted & manage to plan a nice holiday0

Thank you baileycat, yes in hindsight I should have probably seen this coming due to such a poor & unprofessional start.
I was about to blow a fuse near the end but managed to control myself. I'm hoping this is nothing serious and will be sorted quick. I'd love to pop into a different branch and hope they treat customers better, however the phone call demanded I go to my local branch.0 -

to borrow money for a holiday in this day which is seen as a big extra in the household budget is ridiculess , correct me if im wrong !!0 -
^ maybe so... But AGAIN, surely it's a yes here's the money or no. Giving me the money then locking my account seems bizarre, but thank you for your input on my financial circumstances... Just don't expect a post card from me when I'm in Hawaii.0

So you are happy to be paying for your holiday for the next x years? How much is the holiday going to cost you when you take into account all the interest? Doesn't sound like much of a treat to me, just a short cut to a life of debt ...0 -

All seems weird, what did the "wide boy" state the purpose of the loan was?
Did he put new car/holiday or Debt consolidation?
If he put Debt consolidation, they may have cross referred your car invoice and seen your attempts to waste it on a holiday so froze the account.
That's all I can think of.
Over £10k on a car??
Holiday :eek:0 -
