That's the software version; you likely have what is now known as a Kindle Keyboard.0 -
I e mailed Amazon to ask and got a very quick answer which is as below (hope this doesn't infringe copyright - I expect someone will tell me if it does)
"Please be informed that Kindle has a basic web browser with which you can browse web-pages on the internet. This means that you can send and receive your personal emails with your gmail or yahoo account.
It supports JavaScript, SSL and cookies, but does not support media plug-ins (Flash, Shockwave, etc.) or Java applets.
You can use Kindle's basic web browser to browse web-pages on the internet. To access this web browser, please make sure your wireless is connected. From the Home menu, select "Experimental". Choose Launch Browser.
The improved web browser also provides a new “Article Mode” feature that simplifies Web pages to just the main text-based content for easier reading.
The web browser is not available in some international countries. However, most customers can access Wikipedia while outside the UK.
You can also enter a website address in the text box to visit a page that is not already bookmarked.
The experimental category represents features we are still working on to enhance the Kindle experience even further. Please try them out and let us know what you think. We have no plans to remove the experimental features—in fact, we are working hard to make them even better for you. You can select Settings from the Basic Web menu to customise your browser."
have to go out now, but intend to try this when I get home. Am not necessarily convinced !0 -
So you need to get a gmail or yahoo account, then loginto the web address for the gmail/yahoo account and read emails through this, it won't push emails to the kindle screen like iPad etc0

So it looks as if webmail access is blocked over 3G, has to have wifi connection.
Only on touch version , I have a kindle keyboard and this most definatly provides 3G browsing in uk and abroad0 -
I have the 3G keyboard model & although the browser's not user friendly at all & very slow, with a bit of patience I was able to access my Gmail accounts while in Hong Kong, so yours should work in France0

Swan, if I still can't make it work I shall come back and ask if you would kindly tell me exactly what you do !0
