Andy - It showed me they were legit which the VOA actually confirmed. They said what they are doing is not illegal but did I realise the Tax Band can go up as well as down.

Voyager- there are a lot of similar roads around here but ours is the mosty desirable because it is tree lined and wider than the others. Anyway how do you prove that a similar street with a lower Band is as desirable.

What I have decided to do is to check at 6 month intervals if any of my neighbours tax band's have gone down as this company will be targeting all the neighbours they said.
  • I signed up for Dalton & Dalton to reclaim council tax on my previous home. I was assured that it was 99 per cent certainty of success. I paid £165. Surprise! surprise! A few months later they told me they had failed and returned me £50. I have no idea whether they even attempted to reclaim my council tax. Think twice if you are ever approached by this company.

You can ask the valuation office and they should be able to tell you.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • I would like to echo the comments made about Dalton & Dalton – the rep sounded very plausible, saying that our house was one of just a few in our road with a higher Council Tax band. Later, however, I checked the council website only to find that although some properties were on a higher band, this didn’t include ours. Incidentally, when I went to the bank to cancel the cheque, they told me that someone else had just been in to do the same thing! It’s nothing but a rip-off – don’t be fooled.
  • I know soo many people who tried to change their council tax band and got rejected by council. Council makes it hard for people because they are loosing a lot of money.. read this article

Councils don't deal with the banding of dwellings, that 's carried out by the Valuation Office Agency, part of HMRC.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • My Grandad and I had a representative come from this company and after speaking to him for about half hour everything sounded legitimate and we went along with it. Only afterwards did I find out the representative had lied to us about the tax bands of the other houses in our area and found out we could actually do this for free too.

We are now in the process of trying to get the £165 back that he paid in cash to which so far we have had no response. If we don't hear from them we will start legal proceedings.

DO NOT TRUST, THEY ARE LIARS AND ARE SCAMMERS!

    BE WARNED!

I am no fan and no supporter of these companies.

However they are not obliged to tell you that you can make your request for a CT band reduction. I presume they did not succeed in getting your CT band reduced, because if they did, you have little chance of success in court.

What exactly did they say about the bandings in your area?
  • I received a call yesterday from Dalton and Dalton and arranged an appointment for today. This morning though I did an internet search and ended up on here, as a result told them where to go, so thankfully this site has potentially saved me £165 as that is what they wanted up front.
