Can anyone tell me how to get an unlocking code for an O2 mobile which I have only had for 8 months?

You could get O2 to do it for you.
It's free for Pay Monthly customers (at any time) or £15 if PAYG as long as your phone is over 12 months old.

all the O2 phones i have ever had were already unlocked.
Have you tried a different sim in it to check?0 -
o2 iphones are locked for a start so not strictly true
