I know that it looks like a novelty item that would be a waste of money and that's what I thought when I first saw the ad, but since gettting one I have changed my mind.
Below are a couple of screenshots I have just made on my laptop showing the wifi signals being picked up by the laptop wifi and the 2nd one using the Alfa adaptor.
It's extremely easy to setup and use, and provided that you have he permission of the wifi owner, you can lock on to signals from a good distance away (it will show you which ones are unencrypted).
