Router booster

Options
We have just set up an office at the bottom of the garden - current wifi router is at the front of the house & is very weak when you get to mid garden.
What do we need to do to ensure connectivity ?

    Homeplugs should do the trick.
How do I add a signature?

As above, homeplugs are great. I have these: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/netgear-xavb5101-powerline-ethernet-adapter-12302320-pdt.html and they will happily stream HD movies around the house.

(which means you'll get the full benefit of your internet connection even if you are on 80mb/s BT Infinity)

Homeplugs may not be the answer if your office is on a different electrical circuit (if it's external then I'd imagine it'll be on a different rcd/fuse box).
It would be worth looking into this first.

The other option would be to get a wireless repeater to boost the signal to the rear of the house.

You can convert a standard Wireless Router into a repeater if it has Repeater mode. Some of them will have a dedicated 'Repeater Mode' but if not, they need to be WDS enabled.

And if you can't set the spare router (if you have one) to "repeater mode", then you could connect the two routers with an Ethernet cable and use the spare one as a second wireless access point (and put that nearer the back of the house and the office).

If you've just set up the office, can you run an Ethernet cable along with/near the power cables?

It is in a different circuit so we will need a repeater. Which one?

Homeplugs should work across multiple circuit breakers - provided they are in the same consumer unit...
If it works, it would be easier than faffing about with spare routers!
  • yes but will they work ove 2 breaker boxes as the supply goes to the shed & then to the office
Anyone got a best buy on a booster / repeater?

To be honest if I had this set up I would put some Cat 5 cable down there, you can bury external Cat 5 (would be best in ducting though!). Depends how much you want to spend, but if you can't do it yourself you should be able to get a local company to come out and do it for you.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried moving the router to the back of the house. Sound's like it might not make too much difference, but might be worth a go.
