guttering etc

I need some advice about replacing the guttering on my house please, its plastic. Could someone give me an idea how to work out how much i need, and where is the best place to purchase from? and the best type to buy? Short of taking a photo of the house I am not really sure how to work it out. A quote I have had suggests it will cost 450-500 to replace at 97m, but I would like to know I am not getting ripped off, or if I can buy it cheaper and provide the decorator with a cheaper price. I know he will be happy either way

    Why are you replacing it?

    What is wrong with it?
  • its old and decrepit and I need to have the woodwork stained, decorator thinks it would be an appropriate time to change it, rather than stain round it, so the best approach would be to remove it and replace it. If I didnt want to spend on new he is happy to work round it

Surely if a tradesman has measured it as 97m (and given you a price for the same), it would be sensibel to work out how much 97m (call it 100 - 110m) would cost if you bought it yourself - you can then compare the cost to see if it's good value or not?

Or get another tradesman out (google, rated people, or mybuilder are your sources to find someone) and see what they come up with.

  • How big is the house? I ask because 97m of guttering is an awful lot!

I think that it must be Buckingham Palace by the sound of it...

Remember it's not the straight runs of gutter that are expensive,it's the joints, clips and corners etc. You should be able to work this out by writing a list of what is already there and checking the length of run by measuring at floor level.

I need to find out, cos I may have imagined that figure, as it certainly is no buck house! just a 4 bedroomed house.

I have a four bed semi. I estimate the total guttering to be no more than 40m, at the very most.

So if your house needs double that amount of guttering, your bedrooms are clearly larger than average. Maybe you should check that figure of 97m?

For any home improvement work to be carried out I always like to get 3 estimates and look at all 3 on a realistic basis.

For a run of 97m to supply and fit guttering at the estimate of £450-£500 I would say that you were getting a bargain at all costs.

Just looking at the work involved is quite something, removing and replacing numerous brackets, joints, runs, downpipis, clips, the list goes on. Then all the guttering has to be disposed of, think about whats involved other than replacing the guttering.

On the top of my head I would say 'Deal'
