Where the hell do i start....

In 2006 two sinister looking cheeky chappys (both about 6ft 2in, and one
with a deep scar from his eye to his ear) cold called at my door.
I'll never forget it, it was the morning before the England Vs Trinidad World Cup game. We got chatting about the game and i do remember that despite their appearances they actually came across as two likeable lads, but one of them said "I suppose the missus will be out then?"
Big mistake in me answering, i said "No, she's in all day".

Then they said, "Alright mate, we can see that you need your front and back doing and that you might want a quote for it and a conservatory in the future, yeah"
I said "Yes".
"Well seeing as its 'Buy One Get One Free' and its a no obligation quote valid for a year, can i just take some details and leave you our contact details so that you can chase a quote within the year, if you need to?"
I said "Yes"
So he gives me a piece of card with some contact details, didnt look very legit and i didnt think much of it, he showed me ID, i was excited about the game...i forgot about it.

Two hours later me and my wife are having lunch and somebody knocks the
door, we keep eating and then they knock the window.
We go to the door and its a Sales Rep from Safestyle saying that hes gonna give us a quote, i said "But i told your canvasser that i didnt want any work done yet", the rep said "This quote is valid for a year sir and im sure you'll like it, i've just driven 80 miles to get here, it wont take a minute"
So i let the cretin inside, he steps through at about 1pm, gives me all the pitch, drinks about 6 cups of coffee (with 3 sugars!), then says "For the 6 windows and conservatory we'll do it for 26k".
I laughed, he then went on, we jostled and he said "But because of the BOGOF offer we'll do it all for 12k" and he was frequently going back and forth with his manager on the phone, making it harder for me to kick him out, this was our first home and mortgage together and we were naive.
He then came down to 10k, the time was 7pm, id missed the football - - I was !!!!ed!!

He left.

Every year since 2006 i have been getting calls, i refuse to change my number or register with TPS, this is the only company that really calls me.

Last month they rang, i told them to remove me from their database, which ive done every year previously, he said "ok".

Yesterday they rang and i asked again, and this cheeky chav scumbag said to me "You aint got no chance mate, wat we gunna do, frow away leads? haha" and hung up.

I rang head office to complain and they said its hard to know which branch called me, they apologized and said i wouldnt get called again, but ive rang H.O three times and nothing has happened.

Im at wits end with this lot, i cannot begin to explain the devious tactics germane to 'Safe' 'style' UK, they are utter cowboys!

I didnt consent to them cold calling, they did.
I didnt consent to them sending a rep, they did, because they cunningly found out about my wife being home (because as i now know, they need both partners to be present in order to deal).
I didnt consent to them habitually pestering me via the phone, they do.

This is getting so bad that at first it was cat and mouse comedy, but now its like im being stalked!

What THE HELL can i do???!!!!

HELP

Write to them, and out it formally that you do not want to be called or contacted in any way. If they contact you again you will take further action.... Or just say ive had the work done by a local trader and he was half the price you could do it at.

I just say im being repossessed in 2 weeks, but you can if you want!!!! I rent my house hahaha

When I get cold callers this is how I deal with em..

    Ring Ring..

    Me: Hello..
Caller: Hello its John calling from Safestyle windows.. just a..
    Me: (hangs up)

Thats it. Short and sweet, dont even give them the time of day to explain who they are or anything. If they can just call me out of the blue like that then I can just show them the same courtesy and hang up on them just as quick.

Or, heres another way to deal with it.. if your bored and have the time :)

    Ring Ring..

    Me: Hello..
Caller: Hello its John calling from Safestyle windows..
Me: Oh Hi John, glad you called actually. Im selling some of my stuff on ebay, are you interested?
Caller: Erm, No thanks. I was calling today..
Me: But theres some good stuff on there, let me explain the items to you.. (at this point look around your room and explain every item in there with how much you want for it)
    Caller: (hangs up)

Either way, dont get wound up by em mate, just hang up the phone.

Might be worth looking up Section 11 of the Data Protection Act 1998 - it is about direct marketing and the use of personal details. Not sure where it stands on phone calls vs postal though.

There is nothing to pay nor fear from the TPS though, it made a massive drop-off in phone hassle for us when we did

Get a phone that displays caller ID. If you don't recognize the number then don't answer the phone

    Nice one MicFlair:rotfl:

I do similar things as well. Last person i had was trying to sell me insulation. I let them carry on and I asked all sorts of questions.

    1) I finally told them i live in a carvan and explained that it does get rather cold in the evenings and if they did special insulation for caravans. She actually went off to ask her manager......needless to say she hang up after.

    2) The next time it happened again i let them carry on and then she asked I was the owner. I told her I was squatting and that the owner was outside and that i would ask him if he wanted double glazing. I then carried on asking her if I agree to have it done, even if I was not owner, can they bill the owner instead. Again......they hung up

    Oh joy.......

But seriously cold calling is a pain. I would let them know, as previous post, that you have had everything done and ask them to try in about 10 years when it needs doing again.

Send them a bill for your time that you've wasted being harassed and next time they get in touch tell them you want use their company 'cos they owe you money already.

I bet her manager wasn't impressed!
  • Another trick we found works quite well is , if you have the time, play along, pretend to be very interested, get them to explain everything in great detail, question everything, then when they're ready to book you an appointment casually say "Please can you make a note on my file that the invoice needs to be sent to -( then name your local council !) ".:p
They will ask if its a council property, say yes, did you not know! sorry!
They can't get off the phone quick enough!!

We have got rid of a few nuisance call companys this way!:j:j
They also don't seem to phone back after this, whereas before they would ring several times a week!
    HTH !!;)

Register with TPS it is illegal for them to call you after that. Oh wait you said you refuse to do that, you will just have to put up with it then, and continue to moan about it.

But it's unlikely to get them to stop calling the OP anyway.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
