So any random tom, !!!!!! and harry can pick up a toolbox and work in a garage without qualifications?

I'm sure mechanics must be qualified to industry approved level.

This isn't 1991 where there was no internet so I have to ask people for advice.

If they got a website for chip shop reviews I'm sure there must be one for garages.

One of the biggest fallacies today is that the internet is the solution to all problems. The second is that everything on the internet is correct.

But to anwer your question I have never seen such a website. In fact the issue in my mind is not the garage but the quality of the individual mechanic. Even then, while having a recognised qualification is an good sign, it does not mean they will do a good job!:(
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

According to this article, if you can't ask around for a recommendation, Bosch and Motorcodes are the way to go.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/motoring/motoring-news/nine-in-10-garages-miss-dangerous-faults-in-tests-2059356.html

The best independent around here is a Bosch centre. Motor Codes is government backed, rather than being a pay-your-money-and-only-get-positive-reviews site.

    Have you posted this elsewhere?

This is genuinely spooky as I was looking for your post to answer the OP late last night
