    Hi there
I had the same problem last year but didnt realise they were nesting in there..but they still cropped so well...i have taken them to my mums now as we are moving to germany for 3 years (but she is under instruction that i want some runners when i get back :-)....it was her that found the ants nest....oooopps....so mine came to no harm..in fact they were seriously healthy..i had 25 plants and they threw off enough runners to make 60 more plants..(and thats the ones i could be bothered to pot up)they have been distributed right through the family..woohoo

I've got some fennel growing under cloches that I made from the tops of fizzy drinks bottles as I didn't want slugs etc getting at them while they were still small & they've been coming on fine but when I went out to check on them today, one of the bottles was full of soil. I lifted the bottle up & it was full of red ants & and loads of eggs, they were scurrying around picking up the eggs & taking them away to safety underneath my fennel. We've got loads of ants nests in the garden but this is the first in my veg patch & I'm worried that they will damage the fennel bulbs. Do I leave them well alone & hope they're only under the one plant or do I sacrifice the one plant & pour boiling water down there to get rid of the ants and protect the rest?
I'm at a loss what to do, this is my first year growing veg & it all seemed to be going so well until now.

    Hi,

Having a big problem with anthills in my front lawn!

Prior to moving in, an elderly lady lived here and the garden was overgrown.

I relaid the lawn last year, and tried to kill off the ants using Nippon and other nasties before I laid it. However, the little !!!!!!s are still there making a mess  !

Can anyone recommend a way of ridding the lawn of them? I tried a green method last year by using nematodes, but with little success.

    Many thanks!

    Phil

I would be interested in the reply to this one we have the same problem, we also have them on patio but bought some little like glue traps from morrisons which they love and then take back to nest - this seems to be killing them at patio end,but not in lawn.....

    PETROL

Been there, done that but I don't think my lawn would respond too well either!

Plus the cost of petrol nowadays!

Argh ants are driving me mad right now so I know how you feel!!

They are all over my garden& coming in the kitchen all the time, they make me want to scream

I dont know if it would help in your garden but they hate talcum powder for some reason & dont seem to come near it and they also hate mint of any type.

Plus there is the good old boiling water on the nest if you can find the nest.

I found zillions of the things in my garden the other day and put those little traps right near them so they collect the poison and take it back to their nest and kill them all but im not 100% on if they work very well yet.

Good Luck with getting rid of them!

I got some of those Nippon gel traps,we have ants everywhere at the moment. In the front garden, back yard garden and they were coming out of the skirting in the living room on the outside wall the other day.I had enough when I saw some crawling up the walls in the stairwell,so I got the nippon traps and the ones inside went within a couple of days. They just seem to be everywhere though.Driving me mad.
