Unexpected Orange bill -apps using data without me knowing.

I am on an Orange tariff with an add on of 500MB which I hardly use and have never run out.

However last month apparently I used 697MB chargable useage 7.8 costing £11

now I usually check useage through the month when the Orange site works and last month I know there were a couple of days when I used mobile internet more than usual but considering I don't usually use the 500MB I should have been fine and when checking my account last week I had plenty. Checked my allowance yesterday and from my bill start date to 0044 on 13th 24hrsish apparently I used 12MB even though I didn't use it much on Tues.

Something fishy going on?

So I have a few questions...

Is it possible one of my apps is using data even when I am not using it? eg to notify I have messages.

If I switch off allowing my phone to send a receive data will this stop it using my data allowance? as I have started doing this to save battery.

Can I find out where and how I went over my allowed MB?

Why does it state I used 697 inclusive data when my allowance says I have 500 on the bundle? and only charged me 7.808?

Is it worth disputing esp after last months trouble?

    Yes

Yes - if data is turned off then it can't use it.

Depends on your phone and apps - check your manual for info as this changes based on phone.

197mb over your allowance - depends on your contract as to what your excess is charged at.

You could dispute it, many have with Orange as sometime their data charges and calculations are dodgy at best...

I can explain. It sounds like you have the old data cap on your account. This charged data at £3/MB over and above any bundle but capped the cost at £1.50 for that day. This means that the first 0.5MB was "non-inclusive" and charged at £1.50 for that day and the rest of the day was "inclusive" as you'd paid the daily maximum.

There were 2 or 3 different spend caps so may not be exactly £1.50 but you get the idea.

That is why you have more inclusive data used than you have on your plan.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
