Personally I feel that if your mood is low enough for you to consider some sort of pill, then you're probably better off with anti-depressants from the quack.
I doubt this is much more effective at treating depression than eating well and getting a bit of fresh air. Having said that the placebo effect can be very powerful so anything's worth a try."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I did try 5htp but didn't feel any better. For three months I have been taking St John's Wort and I feel it has helped tremendously!
I have not had the sensitivity to sunlight side effect (or any other side effect) but then I am quite swarthy.0 -
My 5-HTP thread has come back to life
I did buy some, but I've never actually taken any, so far. They're sitting in the medicine box at the moment.0 -
I take these after swimming at night, its the only thing that winds me down to go sleep.Official MR B fan club, dont go............................0

For me 5-HTP just cuts out my in-effectiveness.
I've been depressed for quite a while, my brain just didn't work. I lost my job, girl, and home - cos I couldn't concentrate, and had mood swings. One of these when I wake and 3 more through the day - and I'm a normal bloke - considering my circumstances - that's pretty dam fantastic.
My 'dose' varies, but some studies show up to 900mg is safe - I never get that far - 200mg is closer to reality. I know when I've had too much when I get diarrhoea (it increases normal sympathetic nerve activity - too much and the gut 'hurries things along'). I tend to keep reducing the dose, until I feel bad again.
my dose is between feeling crap, and the !!!!!! - pretty obvious flags.
The occasional Berocca in the week helps too.0 -
Loads of reviews that you can split by the condition you are trying to treat on WebMD. Have a look there and around the web to see what might work. Then take a SMALL DOSAGE at first to see how it works...
If you are in the UK, there are 5-HTP patches you can get online, which are low dose and slow-release - which means you can start small (and it means you don't have to swallow pills - which I hate!)0 -
Hi there
I can see this thread has gone quiet but I thought I'd pop a question anyway! Can anyone recommend a UK based website that supplies 5 HTP Patches safely (Maybe RickForter?). I have only found one so was wondering if anyone has personal experience of ordering these patches and can recommend a site?
Many thanks in advance!0 -

I'd be trying mindfulness before any prescribed meds. SSRIs do nothing to increase seratonin. Practising mindfulness has been shown clinically to increase seratonin levels dramatically.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
It just gives you the placebo effect.0

This thread is a bit old and maybe out of date now, lol. I hope you can manage to find the patches. I bought 5-HTP pills from a trusted brand (Lifeplan) but didn't need them in the end.
I wouldn't diss herbal supplements, personally. They can be very useful. (that's not aimed at you, just some of the comments earlier on in the thread)0
