Look at it this way, the queue will be good practice for the return and getting through UK immigration.

As long as you are at the front of the queue then don't worry about it.

UK airports and airlines are hell but it's not helped by the number of men who simply take ages to empty their pockets of coins and take their belts off at security. Oddly women who have to take of high heels and belts are quicker.

Oh and if you don't arrive on time don't expect to go in front of other passengers especially if they are business travellers who time their departure precisely. The number of people who have tried it on with me get told firmly to f*** off.

Women may not take ages to empty their pockets, but I've lost count of the number of times I've seen the security queue backing up because some dozy woman didn't realise that "liquids gels and pastes" includes moisturisers and lip balms.
