Hi
You did the right thing, my friend had a phonecall and the caller knew her name and which bank she used. The caller then proceeded to ask some questions and unfortunately my friend answered... her account was then fraudulently used, although she got the money refunded it is still a pain to sort it out.
I've had a similar dodgy phone call but I didn't get someone speaking to me, I got what was apparently a recorded message from "blahblah security" wanting me to call back and confirm my details. I 1471'd and it was an 087... number (it was ages ago so I haven't got a note of it anymore). I didn't ring them back.
I've had people ask me to confirm what number they've reached as well - I asked them to tell me what number they wanted and only confirmed that it was wrong. All those people just thanked me and hung up so I think they were probably genuine misdiallers but you can never be too sure.
Best advice here is to ascertain who purports to be calling (bank, cable company etc) and agree to ring them back on the number you have for them, not one you're given by the caller.
