It's a tricky one as technically, under the Data Protection Act, the caller wanted to speak to you only and it sounds like they needed to confirm your name and address to do so. You did the right thing by not giving it. As hypno and melissa have suggested, you can take their name and offer to ring them back on the number you already have for them (if you have a number already).

First Direct called me when my account was being used fraudulently, I also had the Child Benefit Agency ring when they "lost" a form I had sent to them. It took me a few minutes to explain to each of them that I would call back but you should never give personal info over the phone.

  • Thanks ever so much guys! Your all great:D

Its more of a pain really, as Im disabled and if the phone isnt next to me, its difficult to get and my OH has been ill this week and my FT carer.

As long as I did the right thing.

Have googled the number and cant find it:confused:

    Thanks again.

Tax credits are like that but luckily they always tell you who they are before asking for your confirmation details. You definately did the right thing.

You did the right thing, if they are genuine, they will write. I only give these details if my bank calls AND I am expecting their call. Otherwise if they justs say oh we cant give you details before we get you through secuirty, I tell them to send me a letter then or leave me alone...

my best bet would be your call was a debt collection agency im afraid, I used to get those kind of calls from them...

  • Hi

Dont know if anyone can help, but Ive just had a weird phone call.

Answered the phone and lady said is that MrsXXXXXXXX...I said yes! She then said can you confirm your name, address and phone number for security. I asked who it was and she mumbled something...sounded like something financial services, she asked again to repeat my details..I said No as I dont know who you are. I asked what it was regarding and she said she couldnt talk about it untill I gave her my details...I said Im not going to do that unless I know who's calling. She then said she was acting on behalf of a client...I asked what client...she said well I need your details:mad: ...you get the idea.

After about 3 mins, I just said that I wasnt going to give my details over the phone to someone I dont know or what its regarding and to correspond via post.

Did i do the right thing? We have no outstanding debt, but sounded like it was from a debt company:confused: The phone number was: 08701525675...any ideas?

    Thanks

They are allowed to tell you which Company they are phoning from - that is not part of the Data Protection Act - the DPA only requires that they talk to you about your account after you have proven who you are!
  • I searched for the number on saynoto0870 - nothing there either.
