Hi
Dont know if anyone can help, but Ive just had a weird phone call.
Answered the phone and lady said is that MrsXXXXXXXX...I said yes! She then said can you confirm your name, address and phone number for security. I asked who it was and she mumbled something...sounded like something financial services, she asked again to repeat my details..I said No as I dont know who you are. I asked what it was regarding and she said she couldnt talk about it untill I gave her my details...I said Im not going to do that unless I know who's calling. She then said she was acting on behalf of a client...I asked what client...she said well I need your details:mad: ...you get the idea.
After about 3 mins, I just said that I wasnt going to give my details over the phone to someone I dont know or what its regarding and to correspond via post.
Did i do the right thing? We have no outstanding debt, but sounded like it was from a debt company
The phone number was: 08701525675...any ideas?
Thanks
PP

I think you definitely did the right thing. No one has the right to demand personal details over the phone. Its a bit lilke getting an email and being asked to provide details, probably someone trying to commit identity theft and if it was a legitimate person they would not mind at all giving you details so that you could ring back (though even that is not advisable). I would have done exactly the same and told them to write. I get suspicious when someone doesnt want to provide details in return, sounds like they dont want to be traced. Did you do a 1471? I bet they withheld their number. Very dodgy. What a cheek ringing at this time of the morning anyway.
Sorry, just reread your post, you got their number. Apologies. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
You def did the right thing by not giving your details.
If it is anything genuine then they will write to you sooner or later. Don't ever give in to pressure over the phone as you just don't know who you are talking to.
Even if my usual bank calls to check something out, I refuse to give my details and then tell them that I will call them straight back using the number that is on my debit card. They have always been happy with this and once I called back to discover that the person trying to speak to me had been a fraud.

The phone number is NTL Europe which is associated with Virgin Media and Telewest if that is of any help0

I am sick of phone calls from people telling me I need this and that.
I too have had a similar one to yours in the past and did not give my details.
Seems to me they phoned early morning to try and catch you out!10 -
I've had HSBC (my bank) ring me before - they ask to confirm name and address, and they always state who they are and what they are calling about (ie, your bank account/credit card etc), but not specifics.

You deffinatley did the the right thing. My argument in this situation is always you rang me prove who you are. Legitamate calls will find a better way to contact you or train their staff in appropriate ways to call clients.
