ATMs to operate without a card

How exciting lol

From today RBS and NatWest customers can choose to ditch their debit cards in favour of their mobile phones, with a new innovation that allows them to ‘GetCash’ from an ATM without needing a debit card.

GetCash will offer customers an easy fix for lost or forgotten cards, a way to get cash quickly to family members or friends in need, or a choice of leaving their wallets at home in favour of their mobile phones.

Customers with the RBS and NatWest mobile banking app can request the cash on their mobile and a 6 digit pin will be generated. This code is entered at an ATM, the amount of cash confirmed, and funds distributed accordingly.

RBS and NatWest already operates emergency cash which nearly 60,000 people have already used this year. After positive feedback we’re extending the availability of this service to the 2.4 million customers who already have the RBS and NatWest banking app on their phone.

This year GetCash will be combined with a range of other mobile developments, which together will allow RBS and NatWest to offer the most integrated mobile payments platform available. Together, these services will provide the first genuine alternative to a customers wallet, all through their mobile phone.

Contactless I can see the point of, as it makes things faster while using the same card as always.

This... this is just pointless. It makes the same transaction slower and more complicated, and also restricts the number of ATMs you can use. Plus, having your phone out at an ATM, and then money too? Seems like an excellent way to get mugged.

Will be handy for when that heavy, heavy debit card is weighing me down though.

EDIT: Although, thinking about it, this combined with NFC, so you have both contactless and ATM withdrawals in the phone, could be useful.

Brilliant, more people taking forever divving about at the cashpoint oblivious to the queue building up behind them!

(Bit of a pet hate of mine, that is.)
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.

I think the point of it is if you lose your debit card or forget it etc. then you can still withdraw funds. You'd be surprised how many people phone the bank and give them an earful because they've left their debit card at home on a Saturday and expect the bank somehow to give them access to their funds, then get irate when they say they can't help.

This isn't being rolled out to all customers today. Some will have access next week or later. The press information is not accurate.

My android app has just been updated with it. I think its quite handy, if you lose your card. My friend banks with HSBC, and lost her card a few weeks ago, they told her she had to go into a branch with her cheque book to get money out!
Debt free and staying that way!

You still need a pin to get into the mobile app

I think it's a great idea, so many customer's complain about having to wait for a new card when they lose one or need a replacement, and it will reduce queues in branches

Just one of the many reasons why I find RBS the best bank to use for my main current account, not for savings, but for current account facilities they really are fantastic. Since I've used their Digital Banking system I've never had to call them once, no issues and if I ever lose my card I know I'm sorted at all times :)

You are right, I am surprised to hear that anyone would ring their bank on a Saturday (or any day) to say they left their card at home and they therefore now can't access their funds but need the bank to somehow solve that problem.

Give us more details please, this sounds like tremendous material for a new comedy series on TV.
