Try to get one with a Li-ion rechargeable battery. If I were in the market i's still be tempted by a Sony (endless battery life and good sound) despite the many correct comments around that you have to use Sony's own software with the player.0

I've got a Zen Nano and can heartily recommend it.
It's got a good, bright screen, very good sound quality, is flash based, so good for the gym, will play a bunch of different sound formats, has a good equaliser, FM radio, drag-and-drop (no software needed...) etc etc...
The only thing it doesn't have is a rechargable battery...but a duracel battery lasts a good 10-15 hours at least in my experience. (plus, when the battery fails you can buy another one, instead of having to replace the whole unit as with rechargables...)
I would also have suggested the Zen Stone (shuffle-beater, I guess), but it seems that won't be out in time.0 -

Good reviews for products from Sumvision, battery does not recharge but at that price you can buy some rechargeables.
4GB will hold more than enough MP3's, it has a built in FM radio and it won't break the bank if he decides its not for him.
Or a blue one for a few quid less.
