You're going to have to post a price range. There are thousands of Mp3 players out there, and I mean thousands. It would be best for you to try and get a bit more info from OH to see what he wants.

  • Ummm under £40 does that sound resonable?
  • I have never even seen one close up before so at the risk of sounding stupid i really have no idea!

a 1gb ipod shuffle is regarded by most as pretty desirable and is close to your price range (less than £50).

Dont buy a Sony!!! The Players themselves are great but you need specific software to load the tracks onto them and its a pig to use!!

Allow me to invite you into the world of the elderly guy who thought an mp3 was some sort of ointment till recently

In one of Martins newsletters, he told us of an mp3 for £4.96 (reduced)from tesco it was a Technica MP-906. I bought one not knowing anything. You may find this usefull.

It is a 256mb player. That means it can hold approx 80 tracks. Seemingly any 256mb will hold much the same, irrespective of price paid. Whilst 80 songs is sufficient for me, I'd suggest to you that an mp3 capable of holding more, might be better.

Also, this player has no screen, so there is no way of knowing titles etc. Again, that's OK for me, but HE may wish to identify, so ensure there is a screen.

Some come with earphones, some not. But this isn't a problem as whichever player you choose, there is a wide variety of listening appliances.

On the subject of rechargable batts. I wouldn't personally let that be an issue.

Ref your concern about cost. If you choose somewhere like tesco/asda, their return/exchange policy is great. You simpy say the item isn't suitable for your needs etc.

I bought three of those £4.96 players, and each one is fine for the person concerned. I can also see the benefit of paying slightly more, even so, less that £20. My daughter bought a £19.99 I think it was and I was able to download lots of CD's for her, and add every title etc.

For a first player, you do not need to spend loadsa money, nor do great research, because afterall, he may not take to using one. Let us know what you decide.

With a compression of around 192kbps, you'll be able to store around 3 hours of music in 256MB. Isn't that a little bit short?

    What about that:

1GB (4 times as much as 256MB) for £13 + shipping. It's VAT free since shipped from Jersey/Guernsey. For £1.49 more, you can get him the carrying case:

I bought many times from 7DayShop and can only recommend them. Cheap, shipped quickly, and as described. I never had a problem with them.
