What surprises me is that the OP left the store without checking the receipt.

This kind of mistake happens. OK, they shouldn't, but in the real world ...
Always check the receipt between the till and the customer service desk. (The car park enforcement company, especially if they rely on ANPR technology, may not allow anyone to return within a hour or two.)
What I also do is to get any small refunds put onto a gift card. Last Christmas, my ASDA (who do have a particularly lax attitude to pricing errors - until they get prosecuted by a Trading Standards office) card had just over £10 on it. It turns something slightly bad into something very good.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.
