I fear I may be un-insurable in the near future

Living in Manchester, with a self employed job in Broadcasting is excruciatingly expensive. A number of insurers refuse to quote when I put the location and occupation in. Worrying times.:(

Try a local broker (not swinton) if you are outside the acceptable criteria for the online insurers.

Insurers regard the media to be a moral hazard eg they still have a picture of a heavy drinking culture etc and they also worry you will have an accident with a very high earning celebrity passenger.

If you're in an "unsexy" job such behind the scenes in documentaries etc don't be afraid to mention it to the brokers. Insurers are more likely to accept someone in what they regard as much lower risk especially if you're office based.

I placed a continuity announcer and a documentary sound recordest with Insurers at normal terms as after a quick word they realised they were actually a good risk.

Also have a look at the BBC magazine or intranet to see if they have any deals with insurers / brokers along with the union
  • I have an office-based media job and always select clerical/admin type jobs from insurance drop down menus. It's hard because I know how hard I've worked to get my current job title/credit but insurance companies just see the potential risk involved. If you can do the same, go for it.

  • You will certainly get a quotation through one of the Lloyds syndicates - try talking to a local insurance broker - good luck

This is quite amusing with underwriters so close to the city. I once did 3 weeks in a city broker to help them out and have never drunk so much in my entire life, including university.

I know what you mean, they still use very old stereo types.

You can't beat drinking on the terrace at The Sterling when the suns out especially if it's on someones expense account.

They also seem to like to discuss business in Whites or Secrets as well

It's worrying that I know of all three of those places from my time at a city-based commercial broker. Never been that big a fan of the Sterling, they only do lager and I'm a bitter man.
