Would you rather buy 13 Ladas, or one Rolls-Royce, when you can only drive one? I'd have the Rolls-Royce.
For me, the purpose of a car is to get me from A-B. Lada's are comfortable and cheap to run.

Wouldn't worry about leaving it parked on the street, either.

If I had the money for the Roller I would prefer ONE Lada and bank the ongoing difference (fuel, insurance, tax, maintenance, servicing etc).

Same thing with the cable. If it does the same job I would prefer to keep the money in my pocket.
Agreed. What a weird comparison, and one that most people would disagree with. A Lada is so much more practical than a Rolls, and the cheap cable works just as well as the expensive cable.

We used to have a 50p shop where I lived. I checked but sadly HDMI cables hadn't been invented. I bought some shampoo.

Everyone, can I once again point out that the Rolls Royce / Lada comment was a response to a previous post which suggested someone could buy 12 pound land cables instead of one £12.99 cable. My follow up sounds weird only because it's been taken out of context.

But I only want one HDMI cable.:(

Why do I have to buy a Gold plated Rolls Royce one when a nickel plated Lada one will do the job?

    The key being "analogue". :)

HDMI is "digital" thus not (or much less) susceptible to external influences and losses.
Yes - provided a digital cable meets the standard then it will work.

Isn't this the core point, though?

The cheap cables are less likely to 'meet the standard' as consistently as the better-made, more expensive ones.....

Doesn't matter at a pound each. Buy two or three, make sure at least one works well, then if you must, return the other two. Even if you don't return them they're still cheaper than a Rolls Royce. The quality of an HDMI lead doesn't matter as long as you've got basic continuity.

Slightly off topic, there is a lot of evidence (double blind tests etc) that the quality of analogue speaker cable doesn't make any difference either, providing it has sufficiently low resistance. Yes there are lots of trials stating the opposite but they are rarely conducted double blind. Sorry for the thread drift.

Since I don't have a pound land within walking distance, I'd rather just buy one decent one than get two or three 'on trial' from Poundland, only to find one actually works better than the others (weren't people saying earlier they're all the same?), then spending petrol or public transport money to take the others back......

Fair point and it's you're choice to make.
I'm just off to B&Q to pick up a carbon fibre, molybdenum/kevlar lined wartering can. I don't like taking chances with the inferior plastic examples.
