Broadband Internet Speed question

Hi
I have recently connected to Talktalk broadband (up to 8 MB) after getting fed up with Wanadoo (now Orange).
I used to be on their up to 8MB service and was generally getting download speeds of between 4 and 5 MB. I live approx 1.3 miles from the exchange.
Since being on Talktalk I have tested the speed of the connection using several website tests and seem to be getting current speeds of less than 1MB - normally between 0.8 and 0.9 MB.
Does anyone know why my speed has suddenly dropped - am I doing something wrong or is the issue to do with Talktalk broadband itself?
Any help appreciated.
thanks!

Some ISP dont show well on speed tests. I am on UKonline 22MB (connected at 13MB) and the max a speed test will show is around 5 meg. But when I download from sites I get the full 1.3MBps. ie it takes 10 seconds to download a 13MB file. Try downloading some big demos from the like of Adobe.com0

I don't think moving from one telco company with no experience of running an ISP to another was a very good idea. You'd be better going with a proper ISP.0

i agree with you both, but that doesnt answer my question! I'll be moving as soon as my contract allows (which is a while yet!)
is there a reason my speed has dropped from 4-5 MB to 1MB?
anyone any ideas?0 -
Probably congestion... or possibly throttling if you do a lot of peer to peer/torrentingEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

If you're having slow speeds only when using p2p, you could download OpenOffice and do a comparison between their p2p download and the http download. Because the Open Office torrent is extremely well-seeded, people often use it to determine whether their ISP uses traffic shaping to slow down p2p traffic. If the p2p download takes a significantly longer time than the direct download, you know you've got traffic shaping.

On the other hand, if you're worried that your speeds are just too slow generally, have a look at https://www.thinkbroadband.com. They have a TalkTalk forum, and you'll probably see what others who are in the same boat as you are doing. If nothing else, you can find a better company to switch to when the time comes!0
