O2 Blackberry contract - i'm confused.

Should be a simple enough question.

On the O2 shop online, I can get a Blackberry 9900 with 600 minutes, Unlimited texts and a 500mb data limit for £32.00 per month over 24 months. I would have to pay them an extra £60 for the handset.

Over on the Carphone Warehouse, I can get.... a blackberry 9900 with 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 500mb data limit for £32 per month over 24 months on O2 - but with a free phone?!?

Why is it cheaper (no handset charge) to get a contract with O2 through CPW, whereas getting one with O2 direct means I have to pay them for the handset? Makes no sense. I'd rather use O2 direct but i'm damned if I'm giving them £60 for nothing. Is there really any difference?

or seemingly the same phone and same terms with Vodaphone direct on their website is a quid cheaper a month...
