It doesn't matter - it has to be declared and makes no difference to the premium whether it's murder or anything else.

As a non-standard motor underwriter myself, I can confirm that it definitely does make a difference what the offence was if you move away from the volume car market that direct insurers and comparison sites work in.

    Speak to a broker.

As others have pointed out convictions for fraud, deception, murder etc are more likely to ring alarm bells than other more minor offences.

For example, I case I quoted recently was for a gentleman who had just been released from prison after serving 17 months of a 3 year sentence for a sexual offence. The actual offence was actually committed over 30 years ago and he had clearly been on good behaviour to be released early. Putting aside one's moral stance on such matters, this has no effect on the client's driving capability so I had no issue with acccepting the risk.

On the other hand we were also recently offered a risk for a serial criminal with offences ranging from assault to possession of controlled susbstances with intent to supply. That one I wuoldn't have touched with a !!!!!! stick.

is a FPN for using a mobile phone treated as a conviction by insurers? legally, it is not a conviction, but I would be interested to know how insurers treat it. thanks.

If you mean offence code CU80, then it is not a conviction and will not be disclosed against that, it will however have to be disclosed under the points section.

Yes an FPN is in lieu of a conviction and is treated the same way by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. If it's caused your licence to be endorsed in the last 5 years then declare it is the general rule of thumb.

Most "convictions" that drivers will have will come from a Fixed Penalty Notice.

EDIT: To clarify, and after reading FlameCloud's post, by this I mean it will need to be declared under the motoring convictions section.

Which part of that act do you say is relevant?

That;s what I thought except some comparison sites do not appear to ask if you have had FPNs they just ask about convictions.

After how long do the 3 penalty points drop off?

    thanks

There will be two disclosure sections- one for non motoring convictions, and one for motoring convictions (speeding etc). This is the section you would need to disclose it under.

The points count for totting up for 3 years, 4 years on your license and the offence is gone in 5.

Endorsable FPNs are considered to be convictions, s.58, Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988.
