Insurance with a conviction

My daughter just got a minor non-motoring conviction but her policy has increased 3x (£300-£900) because gocompare only has three insurers that will give her a quote!

Any tips other than special brokers. I thought she'd been punished already by the court without having to pay up this amount every year...

It doesn't matter - it has to be declared and makes no difference to the premium whether it's murder or anything else.

It does make a difference to the advice we give you.

Unlock has some advice for reformed offenders finding getting insurance difficult:

She won't have to disclose her conviction once it's "spent". Maybe she will have to wait till then before trying. If you tell us her crime/sentence we can advise how long this will be.

Generally, convictions for fraud, theft or dishonesty are going to make it much more difficult to find place the business with an underwriter.

A conviction for (for example) assault may make it easier to find an underwriter who will take the business on.

Have you tried specialist brokers already? Surely that's going to be the easiest way as they have specialist knowledge in this area.

It's not fraud, theft or dishonesty related.

How do you compare prices across the brokers easily when there are perhaps 20 different combinations of job/NCD protection/3rd party vs comp/vehicle/mileage/etc. to consider for each one. There are a few dozen brokers on the unlock list alone...

You start by contacting one or two brokers on the list and giving them the full information to see whether or not they will be able to provide a quote. For this they will need full details of the conviction, regardless of how embarrassing it is providing this information.

There is no easy way around this and your daughter must realise that to get insurance going forwards the conviction is going to have an impact until it is spent.

Have you tried getting a quote without the conviction and then approaching the higher up insurers directly?

Some insurers have different criteria for aggregators than they do for people coming directly to them.

Spiderham - thanks, that's a good plan. Because without the conviction she qualifies for lots of insurers that are just more reasonable in general.
