It is incredible the way some GPs think.

My OH had severe IBS and after having lots of physical tests (biopsies etc), the GP proudly announced there was nothing wrong. A while later, seeing a Psychiatrist for depression, he enquired about the IBS and she told him what the GP had said. His response was "OF COURSE THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG, YOU HAVE IBS!!!" followed by "BLOODY GPs!"

My advice is to keep on at the GP and don't be fobbed off that "nothing more can be done" when clearly they haven't done everything they can.

I didn't read that the lady in question had had a camera down. Hopefully that will run anything really nasty out. It still remains that Drs can get things wrong though and it definitely sounds like something is wrong. Hopefully you get to the bottom of it x
  • I wanted to come back and update this.

Just been to see mother in law today, She was lay on the couch when we got there, she got up this morning for the first time since saturday, then went back to bed, got up again and went straight to the couch.

Spoke to father in law who said he made her soup again today and she had a few spoonfuls then said she couldnt eat anymore.

She said father in law was washing the dishes today and she wanted to help so she started to dry a plate and then she was exhausted so went to lie down again, said she was freezing so he put the heating on. ten minutes later she said she was way too hot, her face went flushed and she started wheezing a little. Asked her if she wasnt eating because she physically couldnt, she said she just wasnt hungry at all, her stomach was rumbling a lot though, she also has wind, burping a lot.

We were talking to her and she was answering us, then she started to fall asleep, next thing she was awake again, asked if she was tired she said no, then she was alseep again.

Father in law has taken her to the hospital, so we are now waiting on any news, thank you all so much for taking the time to reply to this thread, you have all been a huge help.

Best wishes to you all, hope it turns out to be something easily treatable and quickly recovered from.
  • Hi OP,

I have spoken to my girlfriend today as I know her Grandma was a bit like this a few years ago.

She did have a drink problem, but one day decided all she wanted to do was sit and watch the TV and not eat. After 3 years her husband (GFs grandad) finally admitted he couldn't cope with her and she was put in a care home- at first for respite, but when people saw how much better she was doing she was admitted to stay there permanently.

She is a much happier and healthier person and the sweetest soul compared to the women we knew this last year- in fact six months ago!

I do think you need to talk to any hospital staff about this and see if she can be sent to a psychiatrist (they can come to her house if necessary) who should be able to pick up on underlying problems- e.g. depression.
Society always tramples down on those that are different. Abnormalities are smoothed over. I strive to be a wrinkle.

Have you thought about getting their heating checked in case carbon monoxide is making her ill?

I realise that as her husband is not ill, it is probably not the cause, but perhaps worth checking.

Isn't this attitude of "well after a piddly amount of tests, nothing was found so she must be depressed" just lovely.

I have lots of stories like these, the latest being a Nurse who had an op for breast cancer. She told the Drs she was in alot of pain still and was fobbed off with "it's your scar tissue". Well of course it wasn't, it was bone cancer, and she very nearly lost the use of her spine, and has been in Hospital for 3 weeks now getting daily treatment as she is too ill to be treated as an outpatient.

OP I wish you all the best!

This makes me cross - tests test for the whatever the test was designed to look for. If you test for X and it comes back clear, all it means is that you don't have X, not that you are healthy.
