How do you get books onto a Kindle?

I've just been asked by somebody thinking of buying themselves a Kindle how you actually get the books you want onto the gadget?
I haven't got a clue, don't have a kindle and as a former library worker, I am a true blue paper and board book lover. Curling up with a Kindle just doesn't have the same appeal.
Anyway, I said I'd ask here as I always get the advice I'm seeking from fellow MSE's.

The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I just switch on my kindle; there are 4 buttons at the bottom of the device, press second from right. Choose 'shop in kindle store'.
To choose a book, press second from left button, which brings up the keyboard. You can type in either author or name of book, then choose.
The kindle is quite easy to use.
You need an Amazon account, and type in log in details and password, although (I think) you can buy from other sources.
She will love her kindle, a marvellous gizmo.
Good luck.0 -
You don't actually need a Kindle to read Kindle books, any PC Smart Phone Laptop or Tablet will do.
You just download the application from Amazon and use you account to download books, loads of them are free.
Its a way of trying out the system with out it costing you anything,

Oh, so she will need a computer or a smart phone then? Not sure she has either, but will let her know.
Thanks so much for your help. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

Like thousands of other Kindle owners I had the same reservations but I love my Kindle and would hate to have to give it up.
The only "bad" thing about it is that I don't go to the library as often and really feel I should be supporting an institution which was so important to me when I was growing up.0 -
Access to the internet is a prerequisite.
Unless I am very much mistaken a local Wi-Fi hotspot should suffice if one doesn't plump for the 3G version. I suggest either the Keyboard or the Touch; 'typing' with a pad like that of the standard fourth-generation Kindle is awkward at best.0 -
People are stating things that are not entirely accurate here.
You do not "need" an amazon account, neither is access ito the internet "prerequisite".
They are just good to have.
You can put ebooks onto the kindle using the USB cable that is used to charge it (without the adapter plugged into it).
If you have a computer you can use Kindle for the PC do get the books then copy them to the kindle with the lead.
If you do not have a computer nor internet access then your a bit stuck, however if you have sky TV then you only need to go to one of the many wifi hotspots and use that instead.
If you get the 3g Kindle then you can just do it all sat in your armchair.
A lot depends upon what other stuff you have and how you want to get your ebooks. Also if you want to pay for them all (not including the free ones) or download them from the many websites.
Either way, having a kindle has freed up boxes and boxes worth of room inmy house and saved me a lot of money.0 -

Indeed this IS a way of gaining access to the internet, as is 3G.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
