Changing ownership - Log Book

Unfortunately my father passed away suddenly 2 weeks ago and his car has been left to my mum. How does my mum now go about changing the ownership into her name? Obviously my dad (as former keeper) is unable to sign.
Tried to ring DVLA but its all automated and we are getting nowhere.

Also his car tax was taxed as disability, how does mum now go about taxing the car? obviously she will need the log book and insurance docs.

it would be easier if you are near a local dvla office before they are closed down of course

    can you do this?

send the v5 back signed by your mum on both signatures on the bottom and put pp next to where your dad would have signed
also make sure you change tax class to plg
i would put a great big red ring round this on the form with an arrow because ive still had log books come back with wrong taxation class when ive done the work for them

    not sure with the tax
    have you looked up online?
i wouldnt do anything with the free tax till log book comes back and then i guess ask in the post office when you pay for the new disc
get mum to insure in her name in the meantime

    chin up:)

Page 6 of this DVLA leaflet says...
What to do with the V5C if the registered keeper of the vehicle dies
The registered keeper’s legal representative must fill in the V5C with their details or the details of the person who will now be responsible for the vehicle. If there is a new keeper, they must also sign the V5C.
To prevent any unnecessary correspondence, which may cause distress, please send a covering letter with the V5C to explain the circumstances. In the covering letter you should give us the vehicle’s registration number, the name and address of the registered keeper, and the date they died. Please send the letter and the V5C to:
    Sensitive Casework Team
    DVLA
    Swansea

You do not need to send in the death certificate.

You need to send the old disk back, when the ammended V5 arrives. http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_065248.pdf then buy a new one from the post office.

There is no refund due on a disabled licence, that form will not change the taxation class - that has to be done at a local DVLA office, not a Post Office.

Thankfully no death involved but my dear old dad bought his last car off someone with disabled tax, he sent the log book off and got the new one in the normal way but did nothing about the tax.

I only became aware it was on disabled tax when I tried to renew it on-line for him, resolving it involved a trip to the local DVLA office although whether that was because of the urgency and he could have done it by post I don't remember.
