    Thanks, will check them out, does anyone know if it would be feasible to take two seperate single trip policies just to cover the days of the outbound and return journey. If something happened during the travel time we would still be covered right? I understand this means my family would have no cover during their stay but they have access to all the Japanese healthcare. It's just the days they travel that I need it really.

    No way: travel insurance sold here is only valid for journeys that begin and end in the UK. If you had to make a claim they would want to see your travel documents, and once they saw that the insured person had been abroad before or after the period insured the claim would immediately be declined.

    Single trip insurance can actually be for as long as you need it: these limits on journey length only apply to annual policies.
