Travel Insurance for 8 week Trip

My family (wife and 2 kids) will go to Japan for a two month holiday. Looking on moneysupermarket.com they all seem to be maximum 31 day trip or 40 day trip limit.

Are there any flaws in this plan?

Buy two single trip insurance to cover the two days each way they will be travelling. This costs about £12.50 each way.

If they get sick in Japan they can use the Japanese healthcare system in the same way a Japanese citizen would, if they get critically ill or heaven forbid pass away they would stay over there permanently or be buried there (morbid I know:cry:).

The flights are direct from Heathrow to Japan so no other countries involved.

I will join them for 3 weeks and so can book seperately the standard holiday insurance with 31 day limit.

So my question is if we had to file a claim say if my baby daughter got sick on the flight, or if the bags were lost - am I exposed here?

If this is a bad idea does anyone know how to find longer trip insurance for as family. It seems even annual insurance cover includes a maximum 31 day trip rule. By the way, we have no other plans to go abroad in the next 12 months so this is why I was looking at single trip cover.

Thanks in advance

I got mine from travelinsurance.co.uk and it is for 90 days maximum and worldwide. I believe I had to add the extra days I wanted on by taking out their 'gold' policy but may be wrong.

No idea whether they are any good or not though because I have not had to make a claim.

They do a backpacker policy for more than 60 days so you could try that.

I have found annual cover to be almost as cheap in the past, worth a shop around to see which are the best prices for the cover you need.

I did use Insure and Go when the Iceland Volcano stopped flights and Expedia did not want to know. We stood to lose almost £6,000 and although the insurance company said we were not cover as it was an 'Act of Nature', they came good and we got it all back.

Thanks, will check them out, does anyone know if it would be feasible to take two seperate single trip policies just to cover the days of the outbound and return journey. If something happened during the travel time we would still be covered right? I understand this means my family would have no cover during their stay but they have access to all the Japanese healthcare. It's just the days they travel that I need it really.

I would not have thought you would be covered (you know they can be funny with T&C's), but better to ask some companies to see if it would be valid. But taking out two insurances would probably cost more than annual cover I expect.

Hope you all have a great time :)

Bought a policy yesterday for 8 weeks, 1 adult and 2 kids for £47 from compare the market.

    Select backpackers insurance.

Insurance is for the unexpected. You need cover for the whole of your trip.
