Help on Saving on Water Bills

Hi, i have moved into my first 'Home' with my brother and have had some troubles regarding Bills. My water Bill was £34.24 p/mnth but i have managed to save £3.06 (-2 cubic meters) so i am currently paying £30.64 p/mnth, although i have saved a bit of money i still feel i am being 'ripped-off' for 2 people in a flat. HELP!?

ADDITIONAL INFO:

- I am on a Water meter so heard that it may be a bit more expensive?

- I live in a flat above a shop (closed down)

- Next door pay the same as me and he lives by himself (he is not on a meter)

True. It may also be cheaper.
Next door pay the same as me and he lives by himself (he is not on a meter)
As an individual, your neighbor pays twice as much per person as you and your brother. He should consider a meter.

I lived in a 3 bed house (just 1 bathroom) on my own without a meter and paid a lot more based on rateable value than when I moved to a 4 bed house (bathroom + ensuite + downstairs loo) with meter and a girlfriend, so meters are much better IMHO.

I'm not sure how you combine those two facts to conclude that you are being 'ripped off'? The more logical conclusion would be that it is your unmetered neighbour that is being overcharged (and that he would be better off on a meter). What you're paying sounds reasonable to me.
  • Not sure what water company region you live in, but go onto their website and there will be a lot of help / tips plus maybe a calculator for what you use and therefore what you pay (approx). You can get free expandable packs into your cisterns to reduce water consumption every flush and reducers in shower heads, but be aware these can add extra maintenance.

I'm interested by your comment that
I live in a flat above a shop (closed down)
Is this relevant? Is the water supply shared or does each have a seperate (metered) supply?
If shared, and even if shop is closed, is it possible there is a dripping tap, or leak, within the shop.....?

There are many ways to reduce water usage and reduce bills.
most are common sense - every time you use water, ask yourself 3 questions:

    1) can I manage without? (it's yellow, I'll flush later when I add the brown!)

    2) can I manage with less? (I'll turn off the tap while I brush my teeth/ shower, and on again to rinse...)

    3) can I recycle ?(I'll water the pot plants when I empty my hot water bottle...)

Back in heatwave of 1976 we were urged by Government to 'bath with a friend'. Nowadays, it's standard water-saving to shower, not bath, But the next step is obviously to 'shower with a friend!"

Look up your water company and free water saving products, similar to these.

However the RV of another 3 bed(or 4/5/6 bed) house could be much lower and bills would be less than any metered property.

There simply is no 'one size fits all' answer to which is cheapest.

A sizeable percentage of unmetered properties would pay more if metered.
