Hoping for some advice, as this is the 1st contract I've had:

Firstly, I'll just say that I'm happy to stay with 3 as my signal both at home and at work isn't too bad, and they seem to represent the best value over a 2 year contract.

Anyway, I have an iPhone 4 on contract with 3 that is due to finish shortly. I plan to upgrade whenever the new iPhone comes out, probably later in the year, but in an attempt to keep costs down, I intend to call them asking for a PAC etc.

I suppose my first question would be how likely are they to offer me a deal on a new model iPhone? (am guessing not very likely?!).

If whatever Apple releases for the new model doesn't inspire me that much, then I'd definitely consider upgrading to a 4S instead, so would 3 be likely to offer retention deals on that instead?

Now to complicate matters further, as I said my contract is due to finish very soon, so I'm considering downgrading to their 1-month rolling sim-only contract until any new model is released (currently £15/month). Would changing to this affect any possible retention deal I may get offered in a few months time? If so, then I'd be happy to wait. At that time, will they look at the total money I've spent with them over the last 2+ years, or would they just look at the current monthly spend at the time of requesting a PAC?

I may even phone up now requesting a PAC, as I see giffgaff do a similar thing for £10/month - thoughts?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Your not going to get a retention deal on an iphone latest model, so put the difference between your monthly and sim only deal towards your next handset.

Thanks, does anyone know if downgrading to sim-only now (either on their advertised £15/month, or via a retention deal) would affect my chances of getting a retention deal on the 4S when the newer model comes out?

The deal you get depends more on your spend than anything else. On a £15 deal thats probably minimal.

Will they offer a deal to a new Iphone, maybe, but historically all the networks have been reluctant to offer any upgrade (unless you are spending a big chunk of change each month) to the latest iphone deals on any form of discount at least quite a while after the release. Remember the iPhone sells itself, they don't need to offer much of a discount to sell it.

Thanks - I accept I won't get a retention deal on a new model iphone, but I was hoping someone could advise if getting a sim-only deal right now would jeopardise my chances of getting a decent deal on the 4S when a newer model is released?
