If you're going to follow low carb you need to do lots of reading and research. There are many diets such as South Beach, Atkins, Dukan etc, others jsut cut down on carbs generally. Find out what is best for you - its a great way to lose weight and cut out all the processed sugary foods in your diet.

    At it's simplest:
eat plenty of real food, especially meat, eggs, green leaves
avoid or eat only small portions of foods containing potatos, grains or sugars (including 'big' fruit)
    eat moderate amounts of protein
and don't skimp on the natural fats - cut out vegetable oils but eat the chicken skin etc.

Very dark chocolate is ok (90%+), as are cream and berries.

What tack you choose will probably be dependent on WHY you're looking at low carb and what foods you prefer to eat and/or have problems with. I'm just reading Living Low Carb which murphydog recommended on the low carb thread that skymist linked to. It has summaries of a lot of the low carb diets and I'd recommend it for giving you an overview of the different approaches and finding one which suits you.

  • It is important to understand why you want to start a low carb diet. Weight loss, diabetes control and body building are some common reasons to follow a low carb diet. You can get a lot of help on sites which specialize in low carb diet info like lowcarbfoods.org. Also, you might want to take a look at a comprehensive low carb diet, such as the Dukan Diet. It advises a healthy ‘low carbs and high proteins’ food pattern which is easy to follow. To begin with, cut back on foods such as potatoes, pasta, corn, all-purpose flour etc. Go for wheat products and eat more of lean protein.

JERF (Just Eat Real Food) so that's vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, seafood, poultry and game. Your great grandmother hardly ate processed foods.
If you cut out all the processed junk and that includes bread and all baked goods plus pasta and anything with additives, you'll lose weight and be healthier and yes it'll be low carb and you can do low carb but you may find eating the basics not the processed is good enough not to need to count carbs.

Don't think people on the low carb diet support thread will give you support. 99% of them are trying to low carb by eating baked goods, cake, muesli, porridge etc and aren't following any diet plan.

I am truly amazed you haven't been thrown off and banned from this board. I really am.

Unfortunately there is no consensus on what constitutes the 'low' of low carb - with diets varying from a very low carb <20g day to <150g/day. What your body can cope/ will do best with is very individual and can be influenced by medical conditions, weightloss plans and real life!

There is a lot of support and experience available on the low carb thread, please come join us :D

I am a semi-lurker on the low carb support thread and I find it very informative.

Be prepared to meet people doing different levels of low-carbing so you would need to do your own research and find your own level of what low carb means and works for you. However it is a very supportive thread, everybody seems to be very respectful of others' ways of eating now.

Edited to add: I used to be very anti-low-carb (also being almost vegetarian I thought it would be very difficult), until I came across the book Neris and India Idiot Proof Diet. Even if you don't follow the diet itself it is a great book to read, very well written, realistic and funny. It also deals with the psychological stuff. The authors are from the UK so it makes for a much easier reading than some of the American low carb counterparts. Hope this helps anybody new to low-carbing.

I have gone from 15 st to just over 12 st in less than two years, doing it nice and slow, but a lot of people have lost more faster. It all depends on how you do it, how committed you are, how is your metabolism, level of activity etc. As a general rule it seems to work for most people who try it and do it seriously. Good luck!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

I tend to be lurker on that thread , and i havent found this to be the case at all , some people will eat some of the above , thats ok , because some people can tolerate higher amounts of carbs then others .

You just like attacking the thread because some posters dared to disagree with you
