  • I must confess to being VERY careful about water use. My last metered YEAR'S consumption was 22m3 and I pay £4.80/month with Severn Trent. Was £35/month based on rateable value.

I pay less now in a 4 bed detatched with a water meter than I paid 10years ago in a 2 bed semi on rateable value; most of the costs are standing charges plus surface water drainage; I pay £10-50p a month D/D.

I have just moved in a property with a water meter. From a flat on rateable value.

I don't think we are going to be any better off with a water meter. We have been in 4 weeks and have taken a water meter reading and in that time we have used about 5 cubic meters.

I do admit the first weekend we moved in I took all the curtains down and washed them that was 5 loads on top of my normal 2/3 a week.

We shower a couple of times a week and have a bath a few times a week. The rest of the time is sink washes.

How can we save any more on water. I am at home all day but don't drink a lot of water so don't need the bathroom that much.

Apart from making hubby shower at work everyday. And using a laundrette. How can I get the usage down.

As some people here have very low usage. There are only two of us.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Yours

    Calley

This saving probably won't help the majority of you, but I've just managed to reduce my water bill from a whopping £489 pa for a 2-bed flat (yep, that's South West Water again) down to a tolerable £227.50!!

How? I finally got round to applying for a water meter; then found out that there's not enough room for a water meter to be installed, because of the flat conversion. Because there's just me and my 6-yr old here (judged 'single occupancy' for Council Tax purposes) the water company HAS to offer me what it calls an ASSESSED CHARGE instead. Hence the saving of £261.50! (And of course, whilst I am naturally sparing with my water, I don't have to worry about excessive water charges when my not-so-little one leaves the tap running by accident.)

If you live in a converted flat as a lone adult and haven't asked to have your property assessed for a water meter (and especially if you live in the South West), you might be able to make a tidy annual saving for a few minutes work.

    Good luck!

Goodness how I envy you paying so listtle! here in Devon (South West Water a POX on them grrh) upped, or wanted to increase my direct debit to a staggering £35 a MONTH!!!!! I live alone in a two bedroomed bungalow, and most certainly do not waste water, I have to confess if having a daily shower and a bath maybe once a week is waste........then I plead guilty. It is really disgracefull the charges we pay to keep the beaches clean so that the rest of the country that choose to holiday here can enjoy it.

I refused to pay that amount, as a pensioner I cannot afford it, and chose to pay quarterly, I have to say I am DREADING the next bill. I think it is time some kind of regional protest was made, as everyone is complaining.

Why don't you consider getting a meter fitted? Check here:

Some Water suppliers fit meters free and give you an option to return to unmetered but you'd have to use a very large amount of water to need to do that. The meter also gives you piece of mind as you can see what you are using and budget properly. I've had meters fitted on 2 previous houses and never lost out.
