why dont you get the public transport and let him have the car untill he/you can both save up for a decentish car
public transport won't get me to my work either. Plus as my parents paid for the car they wouldn't want him having it full time.0 -
I own a peugeot 107. OH has just sold his car due to the amount he was spending repairing it (was peugeot 106 bought from auction).
Now, we both work and need separate cars. OH earns approx. £150 a week so around £600 a month. I am not much better of as a student with 3k to last me 3 months (but have just got a part time job).
Now OH works at 7am most days and his work is about 20 miles away- public transport is not accessible at 7am. My work is about 20 mins away starting at 9am (11 miles). I've always told him since he got put on my car that I'd have priority as this is my car and we agreed to this.
We can't go on car sharing as we work in opposite directions and my mileage is getting ruined and getting up at 6am to drive there and back is not feasible!
Both of us have non-existant credit ratings (banks reject us because of this
)
So is OH better off:
Doing finance deal
Buying cheap car and accepting repairs are inevitable
Riding bicycle to work (does not like doing this in rain!)
Or is there something else we haven't thought of?
He is burying his head in the sand about the money side of things but our work times now clash and we can't go on car sharing.
I've tried sourcing other local people who want a car buddy to get to work with but no one goes to work at 7am!
I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas for us. We have considered a scooter but OH wants to visit family every other weekend (about 100 miles away) and a scooter is not allowed on the motorway. I am trying to reduce my mileage so try and avoid going to see family every fortnight.
Thank you
how about doing without a 2nd car over the summer(with you perhaps helping on horrible days) and cycling.
whilst saving the money not spent on owning/running a car.
TBH,given your income you need to find a solution as 2 cars are costly to keep going.0 -
Its all well and good him wanting a car but how can he afford one on that wage? Sure you can buy a cheap car for £400 but insurance/tax/petrol and maintainance arent free.
A scooter would solve his working commute problem and he could always use public transport to visit his family if you dont want to help him out.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
You can be lucky. I bought a renault (unseen off ebay) 9 months ago. £375. So far, it cost £150 for the mot, and £130 for the years tax. I did an oil change but only because I do that on all cars I buy. I can't comment on the insurance, but it was about the same as the 106 it replaced.0

I am sorry but you sound like a spoilt brat, it's my ball and i'm not playing,
my advice now is for the guy to leave you and find someone that is commited to a relationship come what mayI

lol. you know nothing about me or our situation. thanks for the assumption!
of course public transport is available at 9am but not to the small village I work at!
so basically you are saying because neither of us are rich, I have a car that I need too that we should split up? wow.
our family live in the same area so of course I'd take him home but it's not practical every two weeks like he wants.
He's hoping to get a transfer to our local town soon where they are expanding their store so hopefully if he gets it they'll be less of an issue as the distance isn't so far.0 -

He'll only end up having an affair with his boss who owns three Aston Martins and will end up driving him to and from work anyway so I'd stand firm
