What's the best way to solve this?
I own a peugeot 107. OH has just sold his car due to the amount he was spending repairing it (was peugeot 106 bought from auction).
Now, we both work and need separate cars. OH earns approx. £150 a week so around £600 a month. I am not much better of as a student with 3k to last me 3 months (but have just got a part time job).
Now OH works at 7am most days and his work is about 20 miles away- public transport is not accessible at 7am. My work is about 20 mins away starting at 9am (11 miles). I've always told him since he got put on my car that I'd have priority as this is my car and we agreed to this.
We can't go on car sharing as we work in opposite directions and my mileage is getting ruined and getting up at 6am to drive there and back is not feasible!
Both of us have non-existant credit ratings (banks reject us because of this
)
So is OH better off:
Doing finance deal
Buying cheap car and accepting repairs are inevitable
Riding bicycle to work (does not like doing this in rain!)
Or is there something else we haven't thought of?
He is burying his head in the sand about the money side of things but our work times now clash and we can't go on car sharing.
I've tried sourcing other local people who want a car buddy to get to work with but no one goes to work at 7am!
I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas for us. We have considered a scooter but OH wants to visit family every other weekend (about 100 miles away) and a scooter is not allowed on the motorway. I am trying to reduce my mileage so try and avoid going to see family every fortnight.
Thank you

I had a decent 106 that cost less than £500, and a Renualt that cost under £400. Neither needed much spending on them. Auctions aren't normally a good place to buy anymore. Ebay, and go and have look and make an offer.0

Stay away from finance. Surprised a 106 was expensive to repair.
I had a pug 205 (diesel) extremely reliable and cost hardly anything. Bought for 400.0 -
The job your partner is doing is simply not well enough paid to run a car at all, let alone taking a 20 mile commute to get there.
Other job or jobs or more hours beckon.0 -

Have to agree with that. While jobs are not easy to find, having to travel 20 miles for that kind of income just isn't justifiable. A more local job with availability of local transport or where you can both manage with one car is what he should be looking for.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. And your suggestion how to sort there problem out is good luck?0 -
I also suggest ebay - when my boyfriend's classic mini was nicked and the insurance were dragging their heals on paying out, we didn't exactly have spare money to buy anything else in the mean time, but my boyfriend works shifts (meaning he wither starts at 6am or finishes at 11.30pm) so public transport isn't an option, it's also too far to walk. My job was more sociable hours, but also not accessable by public transport.
For about 2 weeks I was getting up really early and going to bed really late so I could take him to and pick him up from work in my car, then go to my own job.
We kept our eye on ebay and found a BMW 318i SE from 1997 only an hour away from us. We won the auction for just £485 and it's probably the best £485 we ever spent, it has all the M3 extras on it and it's incredibly reliable. The only money it has cost us is a set of new tyre's and it sailed through the MOT.
Cheap doesn't mean expensive repairs, you just have to know what to look for.£2012 in 2012 member #15: £651.55/£20120
