HSBC are very strict in what lending they take on. It does state you need a regular monthly income of at least £500 to have a credit card. Also you may have been a customer for '16 years' but they have also serviced you for 16 years! Many people often forget this in customer service. Whilst you may think paying in all this money makes you a valued customer. It doesn't.0

I find that odd as well,
I don't have a 'monthly' thing in my HSBC account i chuck cash in when I see fit, but I wanted a credit card with them.
so what i did was transfer 500 in the account for 3 months, transferred it back to my main bank,
- phoned up talked for 10 min got a credit card (because it shows on there system I've paid in 500+ each month for the first 3 months.
(this was recent) and i was shocked that i got accepted....• HSBC (Main A/C)
• Halifax Back up A/C
• Lloyds (Spending) A/C
• RBS Back up A/C
• Barclays Old A/C
• Nationwide Old A/C0 -

And they top all other banks when it comes to money laundering.
What more would you want from a bank.0 -
It sounds as though the OP is self employed, another risk factor that banks don't like.0

HSBC are not the "best capitalised on the high street".
Have they been telling their staff differently then?!
Core Tier 1 ratios:
Coventry Building Society - 22.8%
Yorkshire Building Society - 12.9%
Nationwide - 12.5%
Santander UK - 11.4%
Lloyds Banking Group - 11.3%
HSBC - 11.3%
RBS - 11.1%
Barclays - 11.0%
Clydesdale Bank - 10.3%
Co-op - 9.6%
So yes, they are well capitalised, and in excess of the current minimum requirements. But they are by no means best on the high street.
(In case you don't know what a Core Tier 1 ratio is, a high % = good.)0 -
