So keep matters in perspective.
I've banked with Lloyds for decades. Yet I've rarely bought any of their products.
Sorry, I don't understand?
By stating my earnings, I was referring more to the fact that they wouldn't give me a credit card despite my deposits because they make general rules about affordability in spite of the individual customer.
I'm annoyed because of the impersonal service.
And yes, I know they haven't made any money out of me and they never will as they won't offer me any of their other products.
I would be really interested in hearing about any banks that offer a better level of customer service.0 -

What relevance does the amount you deposit into the account make?
An application for a credit card is in order to borrow money.
There's no connection between these facts.0 -

Ok, so income isn't the defining factor. I understand that.
HSBC have completely disregarded me for a credit card due to their blanket decision making on things such as 'a regular monthly bacs payment into your account'.
My boyfriend was offered a credit card by HSBC instantly and we're the same age, have the same credit rating, address and income. There's one difference - he has a salary that is paid into his account in a single bacs payment.
I have a credit card and a mortgage in principle now.
The whole point of this thread was me looking for a more personable, customer service led bank, where you can talk to someone in branch and they are willing to look at your situation.
I'm really interested in hearing people's views on the banks with the best customer service, so I can make a decision about switching banks.0 -

Do an online application to lloyds like I've said so far so good, also Unfortuantly you wouldn't know if you have the same credit score as your boyfriend as these are only visible to lenders.0 -

That's how business works. A business decides what their target market is. HSBC are conservative and low risk in approach. Hence why they suffered little while the UK banks faltered in the financial meltdown of 2007-08.0 -
I have been with Yorkshire Bank & Halifax, my husband was with HSBC.
I agree with you on the way HSBC treat you.
We are now with Lloyds TSB & they are brilliant! Customer Service is excellent, when you first apply to them and go in to meet & greet/fill in paperwork the banker person who deals with you (sorry cant think what they are called) give you a personal card with a direct number to call should you have any concerns. The telephone banking & Internet banking are good too. They dont like to keep you hanging!
Personally I dont know why we didnt go to them sooner
Hope that helps0 -
First Direct is an on-line bank with a reputation for excellent service.
Personally, I find the Cooperative Bank to be excellent, particularly their on-line bank Smile.
For all sorts of reasons I would not want to have a credit card and mortgage from my main bank.0 -

Similarly, if a self employed person can rake in 25 - 30K a year for the last 3 years, then they must be doing something right, and I'd say more than someone who just turns up for work and gets paid for doing so.
If work slackens off in a self-employment role, you may get less salary, but if work slackens off in a full employment role, you could be made redundant and have zero income.Voyager2002 wrote: »For all sorts of reasons I would not want to have a credit card and mortgage from my main bank.0 -
It could vary from branch to branch. I had an HSBC/Midland account since I went to University in 1971. I never had any problems. I had an HSBC Business account as well, again no problems.
I genuinely don't think than any one bank is better for all circumstances0 -
1) Credit card - Despite an excellent credit rating I have been denied a credit card by HSBC as I don't receive a regular BACS payment, paid to directly into my account each month. I work for several people and I am often paid via internet bank transfers, so despite earning £30,000 last financial year I was still denied a credit card.
Needless to say, I was instantly offered credit cards by LLoyds TSB, Santander and Capital One.
With HSBC they will know whether they are likely to approve your credit card application before you even apply based on your existing current account conduct (known as pre-approvals years ago when I got mine)
So did you have a "pre-approval" and if so - did the bank use it's discretion to override this and refuse to grant you a credit card , or was it the case that your account conduct did not merit granting a credit card ? :idea:Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
