But I just wanted the standard 18-55mm lens kit, on the basis that I'm still a beginner and I want it more for holiday pictures and video recording than anything else. You can never trust online websites either, too many of them say "600D" but really they're sending grey imports out. I'll definitely try loooking around smaller photography shops, Jacobs Digital is too far away unfortunately...
If you don't think you'll want another lens in the future then it's the right choice ... bear in mind thought that the 650D has a new auto focus method (phase detection, whatever that means) in live view that is supposed to be able to properly track moving subjects when filming (the contrast based system in the 600D basically requires manual focusing when filming to be usable), so if film is a big thing for you then that might be something to consider and investigate further.
Also, I wouldn't class the 600D as a holiday snap camera ... sure it's got an auto mode and will snap well, but I use it every day and I can honestly say that you get out of it what you put in. I can't help thinking that if you just want a good camera for snapping there will be something cheaper out there that will do what a 600D will do in auto mode just as well.
This is pure opinion, but I think it a waste of money to buy a DSLR of the kind of level at or above the XXXD and not use it to its full potential, and (to my mind at least) kit lenses that come with them may not let you do that. I knew I wanted to do photography, not just have a good camera so it was money well spent as far as I am concerned, but if you just want a good camera then a DSLR in auto mode may well be matched in performance by a (cheaper) bridge camera. If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.0 -

I've had my eye on the Canon 600D for a while now, but being a student I've never thought I'd actually invest in it.
Yesterday the successor Canon 650D was announced and this means there is more of a leeway on the price of the Canon 600D.
It's currently sold for £570 with a standard lens in Comet, and £600 in Curry's/PC World.
Any suggestions on how much I would be able to haggle that down to, if I did indeed ask for an extended warranty?
Thanks!
I would also consider what extras you are going to need, such as memory cards, carry cases and such things.
I had been looking for my camera for ages and when I decided the model I was going to get I went to Curry's to discover they had increased the price. I said that if they were willing to do a deal with the price I would take the camera, memory card, carry bag and the warrant. (at the time they had a discount on memory cards/bags when purchased with camera)
They would not give me a penny off an order of over £700, so I ended up having to buy online but got a much better deal and more of the extras that I wanted.
So good luck with your haggling.0 -
Well the 650D seems a lot better when it comes to video capture, but I've seen the video footage from a 600D and I think it's good enough for me, I also don't mind the whole manual shooting thing, it's always a good thing to learn!

Also, regarding wanting the camera for "holiday snaps", I should really rephrase that, I go on holiday yearly, and usually for 2/3 months at a time, so it's basically everyday that I need to take pictures. Obviously I'd also use the camera regularly throughout the other 9/10 months of the year, shooting family photos, outings, etc. and obviously, I want to learn how to use the camera to its potential.
I wasn't thinking of buying better lenses, as I am still a student, but having said that, I may change my mind in the future!0 -
Oh wow, Curry's is a little stubborn on these things I guess... just out of curiosity, what camera did you purchase?Whiteknight wrote: »I would also consider what extras you are going to need, such as memory cards, carry cases and such things.

Memory cards, cases and a spare battery are musts, but cases and spare batteries can be bought fairly cheaply off the internet, so it's just the memory cards I'd be looking to purchase from the store, unless they offered a deal on the other two!

danothy - None of the digital SLR cameras can be classed as holiday snap cameras but now for a lot of people it gives them the chance to by a DSLR camera be able to use it straight away and then learn about all the other functions and possibilities. The options of better lenses just makes the camera easily upgradable without too much expense.
Those of us that used SLR's before the digital option like the idea of sometimes being lazy and letting the camera do the work.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

What memory cards does the newer canon take?
If it's SD size cards they are better bought from an on-line supplier a lot cheaper. I also recommend you don't buy too big a size and always have more than one, plus regularly back up your pictures.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

SD cards, fortunately. Yeah if I do purchase a camera, I'll buy some 8GB ones, maybe 16GB, but nothing more than that
I've had to cope with losing pictures, it's not a nice thing to go through so I'll be sure to back up regularly!0 -

I got the Nikon D5100, did not like the Canon when I held it.0
