Canon 600D DSLR

Hi all :)

I've had my eye on the Canon 600D for a while now, but being a student I've never thought I'd actually invest in it.

Yesterday the successor Canon 650D was announced and this means there is more of a leeway on the price of the Canon 600D.

It's currently sold for £570 with a standard lens in Comet, and £600 in Curry's/PC World.

Any suggestions on how much I would be able to haggle that down to, if I did indeed ask for an extended warranty?

Thanks!

Have a look at camerapricebuster.co.uk it's a really good price comparison site for all photo equipment.

    w w w . camerapricebuster . co . uk / prod2178 . html

you will need to take out the spaces from the above link
  • Thanks for the replies, the only thing is I don't really want to buy a camera online.

I feel a lot more comfortable when purchasing from a store, so I was hoping I'd be able to negotiate a further discount in store at Comet...

Do you have to buy the newest canon or would an older model prove just as good?

I went from SLR to a digital SLR and even though it is one of the first versions there is very little the newer ones can do apart from video and more pixels which you don't really need.

I was previously interested in the Canon 550D, but as I need video recording as well, the 600D's flip-out screen is essential!

One thing to remember is John Lewis will price match with other stores. Personally I prefer to buy from them than comet or pc world.

Have you looked at the Nikon 5100d? OH has the previous version and it's also a lovely camera.

Have a look in store then order from One Stop Digital (I haven't actually checked if they stock the 600D but they are amazing).

I know it's not an answer to your question on haggling, but the "investment" you speak of is in the lens for the most part, and not so much the body. Kit lenses aren't really an investment in that sense as they don't really have a resale value as most people either have them all ready or will be looking to buy higher grade lenses, so unless you want to resell the lens/body combo at some point it won't really be an investment, and even if you do, the fact that it's an old body and kit lens limits the market to people who want one on the cheap (even more so than you). There's a whole other discussion to be had on the pros and cons of what kit to buy and the supposed "idiot tax" that is associated with a number of high end hobbies.

As for getting it as cheap as possible, well as others have said the internet is the answer there, but I understand not wanting to get it mail order. I buy lots of photography equipment online but the bodies and lenses I buy in person. You might be better off going to an independent or smaller chain photography shop if you want to negotiate on price, I got £70 knocked off my last lens just by asking in Jacobs Digital.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

Well normally I wouldn't mind buying from John Lewis, but I don't think there's a warranty loop-hole with them, so I'm not sure they'd be willing to budge on the price further. And I've had the opportunity to test out both Nikon and Canon, Canon definitely wins for me! :)

Argos have deals with cards before 20th of July 2012

You might be able to use that to prompt other stores in to making an offer

Thank you, I'll definitely use this to my advantage! :D

I checked them out, they do stock the 600D but they sell it for more than Comet, thanks though!

Well I'm not really looking to resell it, so I guess you're right. But I just wanted the standard 18-55mm lens kit, on the basis that I'm still a beginner and I want it more for holiday pictures and video recording than anything else. You can never trust online websites either, too many of them say "600D" but really they're sending grey imports out. I'll definitely try loooking around smaller photography shops, Jacobs Digital is too far away unfortunately...
