  • I got the Nikon D5100, did not like the Canon when I held it.
Oh really? I guess it's personal preference but I just find Canons easier to hold and much nicer to look at.

Well I'm not really looking to resell it, so I guess you're right. But I just wanted the standard 18-55mm lens kit, on the basis that I'm still a beginner and I want it more for holiday pictures and video recording than anything else.

In that case, have a look at the Canon G12.

I'm picking up the Canon 600D (body only) from Tesco for £498...with my 10% staff discount + £170 worth of double up vouchers, it brings it down to...£278, and then Canon have a rebate on ATM for £50 cashback...so that comes to £228 altogether.

Then I'm going to buy the lens for £100 from another site (Jessops etc have it) I think this is the best method. The lens you get with the camera (as a pack) isn't that great well for me anyway, and thats why I decided to do it this way :)

I definitely want to purchase a DSLR, because I want to learn how to use the manual settings in the future! Paying £300 or so for the G12 and then wanting a DSLR later would be pointless, but thanks for the suggestion :)

That sounds great! Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the £50 cashback has ended...
But that IS a bargain! Unfortunately I don't have any double up vouchers...
Also, you should look around for the lens, find it cheaper in another store, go to Jessops for a price match and they may throw in a small accessory free of charge :)

The G12 has just as many manual settings as a DSLR but I understand your point of view. :)

I have a Canon DSLR and a G12. The G12 is a delight to use. About the only area I find it lacking is for photographing moving subjects.

You could apply the same logic to buying a kit lens ...
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

Yeah but it's not necessary to change the lens to learn new techniques, but it would necessary to change from a digital to an SLR if you want to learn more about the manual settings.

I won't be changing lenses anytime soon, if then.

I am more on Canon products too, I have a Canon G12 Powershot and I like it a lot.
