From my time working in branches, we dealt with "sealed envelopes” and “boxes & parcels”. The envelopes usually were for share certificates, land deeds, etc and we got customer to sign across the seal, before taping over the seal with clear adhesive tape. With boxes and parcels we usually recommended a lockable tin box, but it was not insisted upon. In fact I remember a unlocked suitcase in the vault that had been there for years that I could have had a quick look into…. but didn’t. Customer did not have to declare what was in the envelopes or boxes, and a member of staff did not need to be present when they wanted access, it was all very private.

Having said all that I too want to know what’s in the box, I suspect either belongs to another customer with a similar name or perhaps belongs to your parents. It is entirely possible it is empty box as some customer use to empty there boxes, but still wanted the bank to keep it just in case they needed the safe custody service in future. There was an annual fee and from memory this fee was relatively cheap when you consider your valuables where held under lock and key in a bank vault, cheaper than perhaps paying the extra contents insurance for keeping them at home.

    Hello again

Turns out that there *was* something in the box! However, it transpires that it belongs to a different person.

I will be informing Barclays that it’s not my property in a few days, when/if I am unable to trace the Alan Osborne that this item belongs to. I won’t be selling it.

So, here’s what happened: It’s detailed in a page I wrote to show some pics to some family and friends that were interested. I included the Youtube link posted by MoneySaverLog – thanks for that, MSL!

(Sorry for messing about with the web page above - I can't post links as I'm new.)

    The facts:

    • It belongs to an Alan J Osborne
    • He has a brother, Bill (William) Osborne
    • He deposited the item in December of 1976 at the Walworth Road branch of Barclays
o I was a year old at this time, so that’s not my signature on the inner envelope!
o At that time, I was growing up a few hundred yards from the Walworth Rd, but this chap is no relation.
    • The item was moved in June 1991 to Peckham Rye branch. It was opened for inspection by Barclays staff at that point.
    • I assume I’m the only A J Osborne still with a Barclays account in that branch or region, as I got the letter saying ‘come and get it’.
    • My dad’s name is Allan (although with two ls), so I assumed it was his and took it home. He used to write songs and mess about with recording stuff with his brother. However, he has no knowledge of this tape, or the songs listed on the case. He never had any open reel kit so it's definitely not his.

So – any clues? I’m a little nervous about this, as I don’t know if I’ve done the wrong thing.

    Cheers

    Oz
