AOL contract breakage fee

I have been having a lot of problems with AOL for a very long time now. Back in December I upgraded to wifi with them and although they are happy to take my money every month, they will not help me when I call them as the account is in my brothers name (long story). Although we have filled out the paper work to change the account into my name, they still wont help me.

I called BT today and have arranged for them to be my provider. When I called AOL to cancel with them, they told me that I will have to pay a contract breakage fee of £222.44 as my contract with them runs until December 2013.
Does this sound right? Does anyone know if there is anything else I can do? I am at breaking point now. I just want to leave AOL and join a company that will help me.

I hope someone here will be able to give me some advice
Thank you
Lorraine

If you agreed to a contract with them you may well have to pay unless they have broken the contract by increasing the price or not providing the service that you have paid for.

What sort of problems have you had with them? Their technical helpline is hopeless anyway and on the few occasions that I had to call them I found it a most frustrating and useless service!

If you feel that they have broken their side of the contract but insist on charging you for leaving you could speak to Ofcom.
