As a parent my child owes me nothing but I do hope I've brought her up to be generous, kind and giving. Nothing worse than a tight, judgemental, smug so and so!

I can't imagine ever asking my child for money though, loan or otherwise. My parents never asked any of their children for money.

We did once give our in laws a lump sum of money to buy their LA house on the agreement that after 3 years they would transfer 25% of the property into our names (the other 25% to SIL who had also part funded the purchase). It was an informal agreement i.e. no legal documentation but they wanted to buy but couldn't afford it so we took the hint! After 3 years they refused to transfer a share to us and that's how it remained for the rest of their lives. We did broach it again a few years ago when MIL made a comment about how they had struggled to buy their own home etc. and OH said "we (him and SIL) gave you 1/2 the money etc". but she just blanked it.

House is ours now after their deaths.
