Loans to family

I'm really surprised by the responses here. They are your parents. As long as you can comfortably afford it, just give them the money! If they pay it back, all the better, but seriously...they're your parents. I'm assuming they didn't mistreat you in childhood or were otherwise bad people? Maybe if they ask again and again after that, then you'll be justified in not saying yes everytime though.
Again, they are your parents. It's not your place to "educate" them about money, or to "teach them a lesson". I find that concept patronizing to be honest.
They won't be here forever. I would jump at the chance to do this for them personally.0 -

I think if you can afford to 'gift' them the money then that would be lovely. Personally I would not get into loaning family money - it always seems to come with attached issues.
You could always book the tkts for them and tell them it's an early xmas/ birthday pressie!!! As you know how much they did for you as a child and you want to give them something special.

Just give them the money as a gift. They raised you free of charge and now you are in a position of wealth then give them the money - don't loan.

"They have debts that they can't afford and constantly moan that they have not enough money."
Well, of course they don't have enough money if they have debt s they can't afford. Duh.
Only ever lend money to family or friends which you can afford to kiss good-bye to. If you lend your parents money you can bet your bottom dollar that you will be at the very back of the queue. If you're prepared to be that hard-faced with them about it being repaid I think you should save everyone all the anguish and just not lend it.
If they were my parents I'd be happy to gift them a couple of hundred if they couldn't pay the gas bill but a loan for a holiday? Nope. They need to pay off their debts, live within their means and save up for their bloody holiday like everybody else. It'll be a Jag next0 -
So they will pay you £200 per month and there creditors will get £200 less.
Sounds like an excelent way to make there debt problems escalate.0 -
To be honest, if it was my parents and i had the money, i would give it to them, they are my parents, bought me into this world and did lots for me when i was a child and worked hard to provide for all of us. To me it isn't so much about the money and whether they was bad with money, i would WANT to give it to them regardless but hey that's just me.Raven. :grinheart:grinheart:grinheart0

Whilst I kind of agree with this, to my mind you owe them nothing. They bought you into this world because they wanted you and understood the great undertaking bringing a child into the world would be. You didn't ask to be born. I would give them the money and tell them it's birthdays and Christmas presents for the next 1, 2, 3, however many years you want to make it. You only have one set of parents, they won't be here forever.0
