Well done to be getting on with it and also making money! I've never done a car boot-what sort of things sell? I've given a lot of stuff away on Freecycle but to be honest am fed up with the rudeness of people.

Anything sells at a car boot.
I sold mainly clothes shoes and bags, but also a couple of gifts I never used smellys etc
As long as its in fair condition and your not asking silly money it should sell.
Some of the dresses I sold yesterday cost alot new but I just thought anything is better than nothing
Some expensive things you are better ebaying, but I just want to clear and car booting can get rid of alot in one go.

Well done on starting the big clear-out and making some money in the process :D Definitely agree that for certain items a carboot is better than ebay. We have done quite a bit of ebay over the years, but have found that larger, fragile ornaments (unless very valuable) are really best sold at a carboot as the amount of packaging/cost to send/risk of breakages outweighs the benefits of selling online ;) We once sold a large antique jug and basin set on ebay and the buyer actually sent us her own huge box complete with two pillows for protection to send it back to her!

I have just managed to finish the first loft eve :j
I now have another car load for the car boot on Thursday and a couple of things which are for ebay (2 limited edition disney mickey & miney mouse star wars figures/lamps - we did pay alot for these whilst in florida a few years back and they were limited and were only available for a certain time period, They do weigh a bit as they are pretty big, but ill get nothing car booting so these i will ebay)
I have called it a night for tonight as i have managed to get the keep pile down to one big storage box from the full loft eve and it is mainly baby/wedding/special memories that i have kept ..... i am being ruthless ;)
At least its bin day tomorrow - i have managed to fill our 2 bins and have 3 bags full to disperse early in the morning into the neighbours bins - they dont mind :D
Its a start on the second loft eve after weight watchers tomorrow night  and i should hopefully have at least a boot full from this one for Sundays car boot.

  • I move (alot!) and I work full time

The last time I moved I asked two local boys to help me do it and we did it all in three days (I lived in a large 6 bedroomed house with lots of furniture to take apart, attics to root through along with a garage and there was 20+ years of junk as it was my parents house before mine). Get some help of someone you know- friends sons, friends brother, friends OH etc. I paid them £5 an hour cash in hand so they went off happy to the pub on the friday and I was sorted for moving. This was the weekend before I moved, i just lived on the sofa for a couple of days!

I agree that lots of things do actually sell at car boots- you obviously cant expect very much! I even managed to sell an N64 (game console from what, nearly 15 years ago?!) with some games for £20. The rest were clothes, books, DVDs, CDs, and random bits like a pedal bin, camping equipment and other bits and managed to make just under £200.

You have to be ruthless- don't forget what you pack, you have to unpack at the other end!

And don't forget many people put the same boxes in multiple lofts over years before realising they can live without their prized possessions LOL

Well done OP on getting organised and making some money, my loft is in dire need of a ruthless sort out.

All I will say is the couple of hundred quid it will cost you (cost me £150 for a small 3 bed) to get the removals company pack for you is money that is very well spent. They'll will do it in a day - and since they do this every day, they tend to be rather good at it!

    Hi thanks
I think I am looking at this as a good chance to have that sort out, I really don't want to be taking things to just sit in the loft.
As everything is going into storage I am planning on emptying over a few days and only having to give the house a clean on completion day before we hand the keys over.
Of course I could be jumping the gun as they buyers haven't even carried out thier survey yet, but I do think that they want to move pretty quickly, and I thought that by doing the lofts first it's all things I don't need or use alot.

It's definately a good idea to declutter at this stage but I would hold off boxing up until you're on the final stages.
From experience we decluttered at the early stage and when we got to the final enquiry stages we were safe in the knowledge we were exchanging soon and started really boxing up. BIG MISTAKE!! It took ages to go through the last bit and we were in a right state trying to find things. Then the house sale fell through the day before exchange!!
The reason people leave a gap of a week or two between exchange and completion is to box up. Try not to get too excited and do it too early.

    Oh no that's horrible.
I think we will just go with the lofts for now as we don't use anything in there.
I think once we get to the real rooms we will wait a little closer to completion.
