problems following orange speed upgrafe

I am with orange and have recently has a speed upgrade from (2.2mbps) but I now have a problem with constant dropped connections. I connect via a USB bb modem. Over the course of an evening the connection will drop 30 or 40 times. Often it takes 10 - 20 attempts to regain the connection - an errotr message comes up saying there is no dial tone. Each time I re-connect the speed is different. Before it was always 2.2. I have spoken to orange tech support who assure me this is normal and part of a settling down period (can't remember the actual term used) and that it will stabilise after 20 days. Am I being BS-ed or can I trust this information?
