Leave T-Mobile with PAC at end of contract

I have a T-Mobile 24 month contract that expires on 11/07/2012.

I am wanting to terminate the contract on the expiry date, and get my number transferred to a new provider (Giff Gaff), without incurring any additional charges.

When do I need to give T-Mobile notice of my intention to terminate the contract, and when do I request a PAC :question:

Just to add that I recently left T-Mobile when my contract came to an end, having (thanks to MSE) found a better deal. I've been sent a bill for £15.30 to cover 'early termination' and 'notice period'. Well, my new network activated the PAC code 3 days before the 18 month contract ends, so I guess the £4.41 is fair, but it's a bit galling to pay another 12.93 + VAT for a service I haven't received, because the number has been transferred so I can't use the line.

No doubt all this is in T-Mobile's contract; they also pushed up prices before the contract ended (and that was in the contract, too: because of 'inflation'). I got the PAC code free but the guy was very critical when I said I'd got a much better deal with cashback. 'Lots of people have trouble with this, avoid it'. I only moved to T-Mobile in the first place because of the cashback deal with Mobiles.co.uk, and it has worked faultlessly so far, so that was ironic.

So: what's the cheapest way to move when a contract ends? Is there a way to avoid paying for a month you don't use and still keep your number? Move to PAYG? (Trying for a matching offer from T-Mobile didn't work.)

This is what I started suggesting recently to save the time and nerves on arguing with them. Give a notice to switch to PAYG 30 days before the min term ends, then get the PAC after it finishes.

Ask T-Mobile refund you the £12.93 and the line rental you paid for the month after the minimum term ended as you would have already paid for that and not used it.

In theory, requesting your PAC/cancellation 30 days before the end of the minimum term, you just have to check your final bill to make sure you aren't charged for service you won't use.

Thanks, Grumbler and Buscape - useful advice. I'll see if I can get anywhere asking for a refund!
